Are You Normal?

Choose a path for your child
Favorited (undo) 10 Comments

Imagine you are expecting your first child. Upon investigation, the doctors found a 70% chance of your unborn child carrying a neurological disease that will make your child permanently psychotic and out of touch with reality until the day he dies. Once someone get this disease, it cannot be cured. So, as a parent, you are left with two choices:

1)Let the baby live. There are still 30% that my baby can be completely normal. If my child has a chance of making it out ok, I will have my child.

2)Abort the baby/Let it die. No one deserves to live with a possible consequence of carrying a serious neurological disease.

Which one would you choose? Comments are encouraged.

Knowing my luck 70% is more like 100%. No way would I risk the chance especially if it's as high as 70%.

I'd abort. Not for my own benefit, but it's fucking HORRIBLE to live with any sort of mental disorder :-(

This.

I think it would be more horrible to let the child live with a seriously, psychological condition than let it die.

I couldn't even give you a rough guess. This is one of those things that NO ONE can possibly really know what they'd do unless they were actually in the situation.

People do make this kind of decision a lot based on genetic testing done during pregnancy, I have no clue what the ratio of keep/abort is though. I know one test they always offer is for spina bifida, some people refuse the test alltogether because they don't care to even know, they're having their baby anyway. Of those that get a bad result, obviously SOME of those people carry the child because there's plenty of people living with spina bifida. But like I said I have NO clue if the data even exists as to the keep/abort ratio.

Not really too much hard fact, these things can't really be truly known but it's some good reading for the subject.

I wouldn't get pregnant in the first place.

I'll take my chances.
The baby will come out fine. You wanna know why? BecaUSe I said so.

I don't really see the difference between killing the baby in the womb and killing it at birth, and if it was legal to kill it at birth (assuming the baby did contract the disease) then I would. Since I can't though, I would abort. I suck at chances especially when the odds are against me.

I think it depends on how far along the pregnancy is.
