Actually, the name Katherine has a much longer history. It's spelling was changed by early Christians to mean pure but before that it had a different meaning. Linguists are not sure what exactly it meant. There are a number of different theories about it's original meaning: "each of the two", "consecrated by thy name", "torture", or it could derive from the name of the goddess Hekate whose name means "far off" or "worker from afar". My name is a variation of Katherine, and I used to find it boring for the same reason you do but looking into the history of the name, and discovering all these different possible meanings I never knew about made me appreciate my name more.
