Where are you from? I'm from the UK, that's how a lot of people say it in the midlands and south here (they say 'ant' up north). It would sound weird if you had a London accent and said 'anty'.
I pronounce it as awnt, but whenever I see me aunt I always call her by her name. Same thing for my uncle. I don't know why, I hear that you shouldn't address them simply by their name, but instead as Aunt [insert Name] or Uncle [Insert Name] but I never have done that. Maybe I'm weird? Hmm.
Most people are somewhere on the scale between Awnt and Ant but my accent goes right past Ant and carries on sailing until it sounds like a dull thud of a word. Same as flan and milan. I say both of them quickly and with no vowel sounds whatsoever.
No I haven't actually. I'm sure the Aussy accent is the hardest in the world. I can't even do an impression of it. Not that I am very good at other accents, but I don't know where to start with this one!
Weirdly, I can do a few of the Aussie accents and the NZ one too, which amuses me endlessly for its stubby vowels. I was watching a commentator on the Rugby world cup and he said France played with "tempo and ruthm". I grinned like a Cheshire cat.
Hivnly Critchus? lol, yeah, I've seen it. It is a good film. Scary, though. I'd warn you to be careful of those two now they're out of prison but one of them now lives in Scotland and one in England.
Well the one in England is in Kent. It's why I live in Manchester. I'm as far away from both of them as I can be. Well, unless I come and visit you down under!
You're welcome any time dapps :) might be home next year though. If I'm in Manchester I'll let you know :) if I'm in York I'll let you know too, it is the best place.
Any excuse to go to York is more than welcome. Although the way things are here at the moment, I may be emigrating just as you're un-emigrating. Ships in the night! :)
haha why do you add in the 'r" where there is none--do you say "George WaRshington" and " hanRdbag?" cause I know some people who do. dont understand it myself... 'ant.
I think Americans can't under stand us saying arnt, because you guys tend to pronounce your r's alot clearer. When I say arnt I pronounce it as aaaa+nt
I study phonetics and you're right. In fact most European accents are non-rhotic, so, in fact, it's not proonounced "arnt" but more as an elongated vowel.
"Arnt" isn't pronounced the American way. It's pronounced the British way. It sounds almost like awnt to us, so don't think of it as a hard American R like I was mistakenly doing :P
ant and if i had a granddad i would call him grandpa i wish i could see a picture of my grandpa but nobody has any of him, i have one blood uncle and alot of half blooded uncles on my moms side of the family but i have more Indian blood in me than white because of the color of my skin.
