I saw both the animated and live-action movies before I read the books. I'm now reading the Two Towers and they're differences in most of the books compared to the movies. It's like that with the Harry Potter Series.
I think I liked the movies more. I just didnt really like the songs in the book that went on for pages because I cant sing them and cant imagine a tune for them. It bothers me to no end.
The Return of the King was good at some parts, but what I didn't like was 1. how long it took for Frodo and Sam to Destroy the ring, 2. How the film seemed to have 4-5 different endings (it was dragged out), & admittedly I like the Witch King and I thought he was pretty badass, but what I didn't like was how he died. His armor crumpled up and light busted out of his armor and he blew up. It wasn't as dramatic as end the Bol'roc was killed.
I like to say the Hobbit, but it hasn't been released yet:(
The whole series, he manages to fight off the ring, but yet at THAT MOMENT he suddenly falls prey to the ring! Then he ends up losing his finger by acting stupid. >_<
I never watcher LOTR. I think I saw like 45 minutes of the first movie, and gave up on it. It kinda bored me to death. I think that I was more disappointed, because people always said that it's as good as Harry Potter. It's just my opinion :)
That being said, I've never been able to watch a TLOTR movie all the way through, nor have I read any of the books.
*just lost some nerd cred...

And I feel so bad for Sam ):
I can't say the second one was as good, but I did like it. I never saw the last one all the way through.
