I have not read a single Harry Potter book, nor have I watched any of the movies. I did however, watch the last hour of the last film on a plane.

I have not read Harry Potter. I did however purchace some books for myself the other day. I keep talking about it because its a huge deal OK?!?! I'm even reading all three at once. That is epic my friend. Once again, no I did not read Harry Potter. I did see all the movies though. That counts for something .

I know, I've read them all. I can see how you might be able to follow if you'd seen the movies (though I personally don't think the movies are very good; I'm not fond of some of the liberties they took, both with plot details and with costumes). You would miss details that end up being important.

I really didn't like the feel of it (to the point of cringing). I know everyone loves it so I'm not going to openly criticise it. It's just not for me.

The "His Dark Materials" trilogy, though? That's another story.

They're just amazing, aren't they? A talking bear, parallel universes, aliens, a love story, a female lead, the supernatural, some history, self-sacrifice, a barely concealed judgement of the church, the alethiometer, the knife, and the spyglass being little metaphors? And that's not even to mention the main theme and astonishing denouement.

Plus I'm slightly in love with Serafina Pekkala. ;)

I started reading the first one at too joung a age (like 12 I think) so I gave up, then I re read it and loved it, so I read the others!!

Try the UK audiobooks, as read by Stephen Fry (the US ones are read by somebody else who is not very good). It starts out pretty whimsical and frivolous, but the books grow up really well. Also, STEPHEN FRY.

I could probably cope with Stephen Fry reading them. I can imagine that kind of thing is right up his street. Although I saw half of one of the films and I really disliked it quite strongly. :/

I love the books, and I hate the movies. They took the books, sucked out their soul, and replaced it with tired tropes.

My main problem with the movies, though, is that I don't sympathise with movie Harry. He's just generally kind of a shittier person than book Harry, and it shows, especially in the later movies. In the 6th movie in particular, he comes across as arrogant and smarmy. I just can't get through it without wanting to punch him in his smug little face.

I don't understand why Dumbledore is so serious, either. I swear, he spends the whole sixth movie going ]-: "I'M SO SERIOUS YOU GUYS." Ugh.

His Dark Materials is just brilliant. I've grown up on Harry Potter and can't help but love it, but I think I like HDM even more. I was honestly disappointed with the film version of Northern Lights though :/ While a film doesn't usually do a great book justice, I hoped for more :(

My sister acquired one, before it was popular, when we were at a book fair. I read, maybe the first page, and that was it, but I remember saying that they should make a movie out of the book (doubting that they ever would) and what do ya' know?!
