Sorry, you'll need to visit a doctor for that. It's the only way to know whether it's permanent or just temporary. Good luck.

I was listening to merzbow's "pulse demon" album loud as hell on headphones once, and when i took them off my ears rang for nearly an hour. It was a really high pitched ringing and i freaked out and thought i had it because it wouldn't stop!

I've had tinnitus since listening to music louder than any human should listen to music. In my case, it's permanent. Most of the time I don't even notice it but when I read your post, I thought about it, and now I can hear it. And, from experience, I'll hear it until it's completely out of my mind (usually takes an hour or two). The most annoying part of it is that if you cover your ears, it doesn't make the slightest amount of difference to the sound. It's like it's inside your head.

The only case of tinnitus I have heard/read about was Pete Townshend of The Who. He developed this over a period of years when he was being exposed to high volumes when playing live AND a load of firecrackers crack near his ear (long story).

I'm not sure if it ever subsides or goes away. From what I've read, it doesn't seem like it does. I suppose it depends on how bad the damage was to your ear.

I have never "had it" because mine is permanent and i absoloutly hate it...

Yes; still got it. I went to quite a lot of loud concerts – no earplugs because I could neither put them in nor take them out so they seemed pointless.

Now I listen to much quieter stuff. I thought I’d miss the louder, heavier stuff but I don't at all.

All the time. It's rarely quiet in my head. Some was caused by loud noises, and some was caused by ruptured ear drums. Loud noises are disorienting, I don't always know which direction they are coming from as the echoes are sometimes more clear. It's annoying.

yeah nerve damage is permanent. Ease up on loud noises b/c tinnitus can become very painful.

I get it occasionally despite never having significant aural trauma that I can recall. Most often if the room is very silent, I'll hear a buildup of noise - sometimes it sounds like waves crashing, sometimes it sounds like white noise, sometimes it even sounds like a noisy room full of people. It gets loud enough that it's as if I can actually hear it, though I can tell it's imaginary.

I'm not sure if I have this. I'm deaf in my left ear, which was caused by an onset of ear infections when I was very young. That was painful.
As for tinnitus, I've experienced some of these symptoms, but I don't pay much mind to it. It's irritating, but I've got bigger problems.

Well everyone has it sometimes for about 1 sec to several minutes but that isn't permanent... you also can have Tinnitus for some days or so which I had and freaked me out -.-

But I haven't had it any longer than some seconds since then so I don't have to bother with it... I hear worse on my right ear though which bothers me pretty much sometimes but I'm too lazy or such to see a doctor again because the first time it didn't help much -.-

Thanks to my old bass player i have tinnitus in my left ear. He turned on his stack and hadnt checked the volume (it was on full) i was bending down right next to it messing about with a pedal and boooom, the loudest feedback known to man went right through me.

Was actually pretty scary, the ringing was intense for days. I cant hear it now unless their is little background noise. Like someone said the ringing is in your head when you block your ears, its not pleasant!

No, I don't think so. See a doctor.

I've had it, and still have it. Once you get it, I think you pretty much have it for life. And I don't mean to scare you, but I've heard it only gets worse. If its really becoming bothersome, speak with a doctor just in case.

I have not experienced it recently, but it is very odd sensation and luckily short in duration. I never thought of loud noises being the cause, but that seems to make sense. I always just thought it was something to do with blood circulation for some particular reason. Nice post.
