This is just my opinion, but I'm sick and tired of people always using emoticons at the end of a sentence. Some people even use it after each sentence because they can't help it. Let me know what you think =)

Example:
"Aw, get lost." Would be taken one way.
"Aw, get lost. ;)" Would be taken, I suspect, entirely another.
In this case, the wink lets them know I'm being jaunty in nature, jesting.
I see them as the proverbial relish on the hot-dog of online communications.

I don't care how you communicate. Clearly I don't care how I communicate if I'm willing to pepper otherwise semi-intelligent ramblings with an adult's monthly dose of :P
But yeah, they're cool.
A professional letter or email - or even a text - in the workplace, or when you're representing your employer... smileys would be unprofessional.
However on your own, talking to friends and family, or just chatting on the internet... they're fine. If others get all bent out of shape over it, it's their own personal issue.
