IIN that I prefer disposable razors to expensive ones like Mach3?

I've been buying mid-range disposable razors and tubes of shaving cream for a few months now since I started blade shaving again. I used electric for years before that. Anyway, I bought a Gillette Mach 3 the other day. It cost about $10 for the razor and $20 for the blade refills. I also bought some brand name wet-shaving cream along with a dish and a shaving brush for about $30 so the total kit cost about $60. I dipped the shaving brush in hot water and then lathered up the shaving cream. The warm shaving cream was pleasant on my face, but if I used the same methods to warm up the cheap shaving cream, it felt just as good. The bigger surprise was the shave with the Mach 3. I have to say it was totally ordinary. About the same as with the mid-range disposable Shick and Gillette razors I've been using which cost about $2.50 each, or maybe even a bit worse. Gilette says the Mach 3 is good for 10 shaves but after 3 shaves it feels like I need a new blade. I begin to think this whole expensive-shaving thing is a scam to get money out of brand-name snobs.

I hate disposable razors and I hate multi-blade expensive 'cartridge' ones even more.
The absolute best way to shave is the traditional double-sided safety razor. A quality holder can be picked up from a flea market cheap and will last a lifetime, and blades are about £1.00 / $1.50 a pack of five. They never clog up with hair and the double-sided nature is more ergonomic than any swivelling-head nonsense. And while I'm here, fuck aerosol shaving foam.. A brush and soap makes a much thicker lather than anything from a can.
I'm not a complete luddite, but shaving technology from 100 years ago has not been bettered.

That was a very good post. I will try some of your ideas. I have never used a double sided safety razor before but it's a cheap experiment.

I'm sure you won't regret it. Though I've just searched the price of new holders and they're madly expensive! Popular with hipsters these days maybe?
So I'd recommend keeping an eye on flea markets or secondhand shops, or even ask if your grandad has one lying around he could donate? I've picked up a few over the years and never spent more than a couple of pounds.

A straight razor hot shave is probably the most luxurious shave to be had. Those dumb disposables are still cheap even if they cost a lot, if you know what I'm saying.

I am too chicken to try a straight razor. The idea of a large super-sharp knife by my major arteries freaks me out. Shaving isn't worth being one cough away from death.

I had the same fear as you did, but i got over it. the blades arent actually that large, and its actually very hard to cut yourself when you shave with a straight razor. this is because you are very lightly pushing the blade across your face. if you "saw" and go back and forth, that is how you cut yourself, but you never are in a position to slice yourself like that if you follow techniques that gentelmen have been using for a centuries.

Ill add that the cuts you may get are very small nicks and dont hurt at all because of how sharp the blade is.

I tried to look up in the Bible how Jesus shaved but there was no mention of it.

Something along the lines of a straight razor, I'm sure. But he was a Jew so he had to follow rules dictating if/how he could trim his beard.
