I am not obsessed, but i like it, admittedly. The culture part not any more than, say, indian, russian or chinese culture. But i can't really relate to arabian/african culture, and the american native cultures were all but made extinct and replaced by something too similar to what i grew up in to be interesting. So there's few "grand" cultures left that are sufficiently different AND sufficiently present to permeate our lifestyles...mostly thanks to animes and games, japanese among them. *shrug*
It's like, yeah, i love animes. I also love burger king. If i let "foreign" culture penetrate my life, why not go all the way-
so ya, after friends compared me with her, i actually cosplayed konata izumi from lucky star during the last halloween party, BUT: i just had to look up her name to write this post ^_^
sorry if that's enough to "get on your tits" but i think few countries except france are really defensive against invasive foreign culture, and i admit to preferring japanese over american any day. Doesn't mean i have to forget my own nations history and heritage ;)
I think it only bothers me when it seems like a naive obsession. There's racism, sexism and some very conservative social etiquette in Japan that often goes ignored by weeaboos who only look to crazy, entertaining animé as a reflection of Japanese culture.
It's probably because when I was younger I used to think Japan and China were the coolest places ever... But that was because I loved Akira and Jackie Chan. When I actually learned about both countries, I found a lot of stuff that wasn't quite as nice.
So I feel like I have a more balanced view now. I'm appreciative of Japanese animé and manga when it's done well, I find their food interesting, some of their movies (especially horrors) have had a big impact worldwide, they've shaped much of the video game industry with some awesome franchises and of course they have some amazing technology brands.
It only gets on my tits when it seems like a tunnel-vision, ignorant expression of love for everything Japanese. I don't resent people who just love certain aspects of the culture :) that's cool.
Weeaboos are mostly Western, mostly white people with an obsession with Japanese animé and culture. They are more kowai than kawaii.
They tend to get on my tits.
(P.S. you may be one of them)
