Most Common Reasons for Emotional Shut Down
Favorited (undo) 22 Comments

I have been reading a bit about emotional shut down since I have experienced it in my early years and have come up with this question. I don't remember the reason for the shut down in my life, and don't presume to know the reason for most people even though the overall reason depicted in most researches is that of depression or something similar. Not in my case, what about yours?

That "CareFree" Gum is a load of bull. Whenever I lose the flavor I'm back to pondering whether or not I even exist :(

Generally speaking I'm not emotionally shut down, although I'm immune to certain things which are considered traumatic to others, specifically divorce and parents having relationship problems. It seems to be a big deal to most, but I really couldn't care less. As to why I don't care, I'd say it's consistency. I think I got so used to seeing my parents breaking up and then getting back together that I became immune. Hope that helps:)

Yeah, that sometimes does happen. Although I think it's more like numb than immune. But man, that does have a solution. I used to be very completely numb because of the emotional roller coaster my family was and nowadays it's all good. Don't accept it as normal. It isn't, better said, it shouldn't be. Family is the first and foremost important thing in the structure of a healthy development. Unfortunately it has become very "normal" to have a broken family in today's society. Don't accept it bro, but don't sweat it. Look for meaningful friends and risk doing things which you honestly believe will make you happy, even though right now you are probably numb to that feeling aswell. Don't give up, chin up. :)

I'm not numb at all, far from it. I've never been very close to my family, so it's never bothered me. I only say I'm immune to it is because so many seem to care about their parents' relationship, but it doesn't effect me. My friends have always been the most important thing in my life, and I don't need to look for anything. I'm not some mess of a person who can't get over their parents shitty relationship, it's never bothered me.

I'm very very emotionally shut down, and I'd say it's caused by an inability to cope with my emotions of fear and vulnerability.

Everyone has fears, just try not to let them overwhelm your will. The capacity to choose has always a great impact on your physical/emotional state. Try it out, choose what you honestly believe will make you happy and go for it.

No idea, I haven't experienced any, regardless of my life suggesting I would of felt most of these.

Bound by it? What if you decided to try something else, would that be the solution?

Nothing shuts me down faster than someone who says something they don't know really hurts. The kind where you both kind of laugh and you're hurting inside for 3 days because they don't know how offensive or sometimes truthful it was.

Sadness, Fear, anxiety, shock, pain. All of this leads to become empty, and when your empty you already lost yourself.
