There is also the fact that prolonging the war was of serious financial interest to the USA. As the principal supplier of everything that the Allies needed, they were making big money - something that made the US economy was it is to this very day. They couldn't let the Allies lose because they were selling too much stuff to them and if the Germans had won they'd have been in real trouble.
