Okay friends, I'm a student and I'm heavily studying rats right now. I'm an animal lover and I have 5 rats at home at the moment in 2 cages. I know the sad fact that rats are as taboo as marijuana. So I'd like to know everyone's opinion about rats as pets. Don't be too harsh please, it can be offensive to those who have one as pet.

On top of that, you generally find that women who keep rats are clever, funny and cute as well. Or maybe I've just met the good ones. Not sure about men who keep rats because I don't know any, although I'd like ratties myself.
Wonderful pets, clever, affectionate and often very funny. I kept mine in a cage to start but soon found it wasn't neccesary - they'll use a litter tray and dont make a mess. One did like chewing wires though so I had to keep cables out of reach.
They'd follow me andthe girlfriend around everywhere, and the one who's now died would sleep at the foot of our bed.
We trained them to do an obstacle course, fetch, and spin in circles on command.
They enjoy riding on shoulders and sleeping in pockets :D
I know I'm probably preaching to the choir here, seems there's a lot of rat-fans in this thread :)
This actually happened to me btw.
