I've never been to the United States. What should I see on my first journey there?
Or should I pick another place to visit?

where are you from?
I read the question again and i think you first visit should be New York.
you can do everything there.I hope you have a safe and wonderful time.and wish you all the best with which ever place you choose.
That city is a unique experience on its one. Whenever I go there, I feel like I'm in a separate world. There are so many different cultures and ideas that merge there. It's beautiful!
I would also recommend NY but I've never been there so I can't comment on how great that place is. But I know everyone who went to NYC loved being there.
Lots of theme parks and crocodile parks and stuff too if I remember correctly.
Also, if serious nature isn't what you really want out of your trip, hit up the East Coast, Washington DC has a lot of great stuff, and though the city ain't cheap, there are a lot of free things to see if you research it well, and most people around that area are used to people speaking other languages. Also, great way to get some learning (brainwashing...I kid...) on the history.
I highly recommend reading something on it yourself on the plane to get the most out of a more history or cultural experience oriented trip.
I do that kind of research, almost pre-trip contemplation, when I visit other countries, and it has never failed to serve me well.
Also! For a city trip, San Francisco, hands down.
If you have any friends in America, visit them. If you're by the boarders, Mexico and Canada are also worth visiting, same thing for Cuba, actually, which I've not-so-legally been to (go via Canada).
To know some about a people&place before going there, I like to read their books, books about their history and culture, watch their television (can't go wrong with Die Sendung mit der Maus...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-BGepjoNJE), movies (Der Baader Meinhof Komplex is really good)...plus talking to people who've been there, as I see you've already been doing.
Area residents aren't horrible people...but I pity them to live in such a place.
