I went to seminary for a few months out of curiosity, and asked him this very thing. He told me all people have a second chance in the after-life to try and learn the religion once again. I was raised Christian. I believe there's some greater power out there, not sure what the fuck it is or how it got there, but the world is too much of an incredible place for me to merely pass it off as evolution and coincidence. I don't go to Church and feel uncomfortable around strictly religious people. I also don't give a shit whether or not other people are Christians.
I think I'd be called a non-practising Catholic. I still believe in God, pray often and try to be good, but I haven't been to church in years. I'm a vegetarian, but before I made that choice I didn't give up meat during lent. Neither does anyone else in my family.

Mormonism is a religion that has some sections that can be considered cults. It's not in any way on the same level as Scientology, which was founded (and still is) largely for profit. A lot of the Mormonism stuff you hear about is about extremists, though, especially the stuff about polygamy and abuse. You can make a lot of religions look awful by focussing on extremists. People either take a couple of classes and get out (in which case they're no longer members) or they stay in and are forced to cut off their non-Scientologist friends and loved ones over time.

I have never been abused within the church nor have they tried to force me to leave my non-Mormon friends and loved ones. The Mormon church is different from other Christian churches because they adhere to a more conservative version of the established Church as was described in the Bible not to mention their belief that the word of God has yet to be fully revealed and that continued revelation is possible and necessary, however, it's not nearly as cultish as people love saying it is.
