I would confront them because they are a friend and I have no problems talking to my friends. First I'd tell them what I heard and ask them what really said. I'd rather hear it from my friend directly so that I can interpret their intentions for myself, instead of having a third party do it for me.
Obviously ask them. I don't often believe rumors or what other people say unless I have prove of it myself. You can't always believe what "everyone" says. People love to make things up and make problems bigger than they already are.
tommythecat would beat their ass because he's so hard, they'd shit themselves trembling in fear. tommythecat is hear and I talked shit about him? damn, I better run like hell, I'm gonna catch a beating! Damn I don't want to die today! why are you so hard tommy? (not the way your boyfriend says it) why do you have to be such a cold blooded gangster? why arent you in the russian mafia with your ice cold blood and your bad boy swagger. please, dont beat my ass and make me bleed my own blood.
People talk about each other's backs all the time. But if he said something you find really hurtful, then ask him whether he really said that, and talk stuff out.
It depends on what they supposedly said. If it was gossip, I'd confront them to see what was really said. If its confirmed that it was indeed gossipy shit talk, or they refuse to discuss it, then I really don't need that person in my life. I'm done dealing with people that talk shit. If they were worried about me or angry with me, I'd confront them and see if the issue can be resolved.
I confronted a friend about a Tumblr post that was blatantly about me by saying "Shall we talk about your little Tumblr rant like proper grown-ups?" She did similar on Twitter and I called her out on it there.
She responds by even denying it's me she's talking about when that is blatantly not true if you know the pair of us and how girls work. I respond by us two exchanging words.
We didn't speak for a week or two, but we're talking again now. However, I've seen how many friends she has that she considers better than me and will just let her go if anything like this ever happens again.
I have this friend who always puts me down, I don't say anything rude to her and we're supposed with to be best friends. I have trouble confronting her, hopefully I can one day.

Watch "Eastern Promises" with Viggo Mortensen; lot's of bad boy swagger up in there.
