It's difficult to know what to listen to. Music is a bit like a drug and when you're already emotional, you're not sure what affect it's going to have on you. But I would say that happy music is best for neutral moods and when I'm down, I go with angry or sad.
Actually, I tend to crave certain forms of music. Most of my music is '70s-'80s-'90s music, with some recent and top 40's mixed in, and I believe I have a song for just about every mood I have known myself to be in because I went through a phase where I would research and download a song to fit each individual mood.
It's not as technical as it sounds. Usually I will listen to an emo song to compliment my mood, and slowly upgrade the music to a lighter tone, or if I am driving, set it to a very down song before I set out, put it on shuffle, and sing every song I know. Singing usually helps me feel better.
Singing always makes me feel good! No matter how sad or upset I am, singing always cheers me up somewhat, even if its only temporarily. I love driving by myself or being home alone so I can sing at the top of my lungs. However, my car windows are barely tinted so I probably look like a lunatic to everyone I drive by...especially at stop lights
No more ridiculous than those weirdos that have angry conversations on their bluetooths in the car. My car is a 1995 with a tape deck so it's mp3 compatible which is a blessing because I love being able to listen to my music in the car.
I'm usually too absorbed to notice what other drivers are doing, but there is something unnerving about glancing over your shoulder before merging lanes and catching the eye of the stranger in the car next to you staring you down intently. But I guess I really shouldn't be one to talk since I simply cannot contain my laughter when I see an angry person on their bluetooth talking extensively with their hands.
I agree. Driving would be so dull if I couldn't play my mp3s since the radio stations where I live play absolutely nothing I like.
Most of my music would be described as sad anyway, and I usually listen to really chilled songs which would probably be considered depressing by others. Although they don't make me sad.
If I listen to happy music when I'm sad, it just makes me angry.
Music with emotional power directed any which way seems to do the trick for me. Mellow tunes such as "Us & Them" by Pink Floyd, Angry tunes such as "Angel of Death" by Slayer, happy tunes such as "Backwards Down the Number Line" by Phish (which happens to be the happiest song ever, if you haven't heard it), ect...
I'm barely happy or sad, but the things I like to listen or watch to never change. Sometimes I like something, then I'll go to something completely different after that. At the moment I am watching this.
Drag the waters some more with a vulgar display of power........because i'm a cowboy from hell that has become far beyond driven by the great southern trendkill to reinvent the steel.
It's the only time you'll ever see every Pantera album in one sentence. Glam is poo, Winger can suck my balls. I like 80's metal, but not the overly glam stuff like Kiss....i prefer moterhead, that sort of thing.
I listen to the same things I'd listen to if i weren't down, but they tend to have more meaning when i'm emotional. Mostly incubus. They are awesome no matter what mood i'm in.
I normally go with music to match the mood I'm in, then gradually the music goes in a gradient from sad to happy. That way, I get rid of the sadness and make myself feel better :P
I crank out the ol' Evanescene CDs when I start feeling sad and depressed.
Naturally, it doesn't really help much.
But I distinctly remember between the ages of 11-15 when I was periodically depressed for no good reason, I would always listen to their first album. Evanescence was pretty much my life when I became sad or depressed. I was such a dork back.
i usually listen to something for the catharsis and have a good crying breakdown, then i'll work up to more positive music, or at least neutral realism or stuff with buddhist ideas. if it's too fake happy it makes me wanna kill myself.

It helps to have very eclectic tastes I guess.
