There are two kind of respect: basic respect, and earned respect. Everyone deserves a certain level of basic respect just by virtue of being a human being, but there is a deeper kind of respect that happens when you especially admire the individual qualities of a person, and this can only be earned.
Consequences being lack of relationship, hairy palms, one arm being much bigger than the other, penis blisters, very little free time, and a ton of computer viruses. Also all the dinosaurs will go extinct.\
Seems like pulling on it that much could cause it to stretch not shrink!
Respect is earned, not entitled. This doesn't mean that you have the right to disrespect people you don't respect, it just means that they haven't done anything for you to respect them, so you don't treat them with respect or disrespect.
I don't like the idea of "respect is entitled to everyone". We don't know what that individual has done, they have given us no actual reason to respect them other than they are human, we have no actual knowledge of if they are secretly an asshole, and if they just play nicely in front of people. Where as when respect is earned, they have to prove they are someone to be respected, they would have to do something that requires a lot of effort to do that you would deam respectful, so that it is less likely they are just pretending to be a nice person, but is in fact a nice person that deserves respect.
Remember, not respecting someone doesn't mean you disrespect them.
I respect everyone, even if they give me a reason not to respect them. I always try to show the basic respect. If they dislike me even after I have shown them respect, I can say honestly that this person probably has issues that have nothing to do with me.
But that deeper level of respect... that must be earned.

I saw this question earlier and I could not find the right words to express my thoughts. You summed it up perfectly. :)
