A lot of people seem to be taking this question literally instead of looking at the metaphor.. not sure how I should answer.
Poor and happy rather than rich and sad, definitely, but if I take it literally...
I really AM poor. I would rather be sad in a BMW. I'd get over whatever I was sad about and sell the car for much needed money. Good times will always come again, and I already have a bicycle, which is not as valuable as a luxury car. Derp.
I won't lie i took this literal despite understanding the context, mainly because i haven't been a bicycle person since i was a child (ironically enough) the period i was happiest.
I chose crying in the backseat of a BMW. I'm an emotional bitch with the attention span of a fly. If I'm crying I'll probably get over it in a couple minutes. But after I'm done laughing on the back of that bicycle, I'm still gonna be on the back of a bike in the middle of January.
Haha. I think you're asking whether you'de rather be poor and happy or rich and miserable. Give me the tandem bike. But why the back seat of a bicycle?
The OP must be Chinese. This is a popular question in China (I'm not Chinese, but have been there) and it is mainly directed at single women seeking a husband. In other words, would you rather marry a rich guy who was a jerk, or a poor guy who made you happy? Surprisingly, most Chinese women are materialistic enough to choose the former.
Am I missing something? If I'm crying then I'm sad, if I'm laughing then I'm happy. If I'm crying in a BMW, it clearly doesn't make me happy, so has no value. If I'm laughing on a bike I'm clearly happy, therefore it does have value.
Therefore I'd rather be laughing on a bike. Not even a tough decision.
I'd rather be laughing on a bicycle than in a big pimp car.
But, it's not only laughs that can happen on the seat of a bicycle. There are also tears: from not being able to stop and consequentially falling over on the hard concrete.
I also misread the question at first xD. I'd rather laugh on a bicycle and only ride the BMW to far away places. No seriously I'd rather irl have the BMW and after I get over the sadness sell it like PumpkinKate lol.
I thought it had more to do with comfort and security. The BMW is likely warm and cushioned and luxurious and you might even enjoy a good cry, but you prefer material wealth over true spiritual wealth, or being rich in soul, which is why being on the backseat of a bicycle is good enough for that person. Why would you trade an internal happiness for a false happiness?

Btw is your name Erin? I dated a girl named erin i always called rin.
Cry in a BMW because I don't know how to ride a bike XD Is it easier to sit in the back or do you need good balance too??
