We are all just ants on a cosmic anthill, and if you want to bicker over the only home we have in this universe, then be my guest. But, just think for a second. What if, instead of fighting over our own cultural differences, we, as a species, banded together to conquer the unknown reaches of the universe. That, my friends, is where real human victory lies: not in war, but in the complete and total control of the entire universe. Our own problems and hatred is what keeps us from our full potential as a species. So, instead of arguing over which country is cooler, or how some countries have better materialisms or idealisms than others, go forth and be a proclaimer of peace. I was once married to a Chilean man, and one day I asked him about the somewhat less-than-positive impression that other countries seem to have of Americans. His opinion was that we seemed clannish, arrogant, and disinterested in learning about the cultures of other nationalities.

As an American, sometimes I feel pretty sealed off from the rest of the world. I think that's why the movie "Borat" was so successful. It brilliantly illustrates how some Americans lump certain foreigners together into some vague "generic foreigner" who is never clearly understood. In "Borat", it seemed like most of the people who came in contact with him didn't really have any idea where he was from; they just knew he was dark, had an accept, and therefore, was probably a bit simple-minded.

I sometimes feel that our government does very little to help immigrants to ingratiate themselves into their new society here. For example, at this time, we have a large influx of Russians and Ukraines coming into Northern California, and probably elsewhere. Not one person I've talked to likes these folks (including myself, sadly), and it's unfortunate. I'd like to know more about their customs but they are incredibly stand-offish and even confrontational. Our country was founded by immigrants, but a lot of people (this is strictly my perception) seem to be here entirely for monetary reasons and take no interest in sharing their culture with us.

So I would say that the fault does lie with us in many ways -- I think we CAN be incredibly arrogant and clannish, particularly when we travel. But when other nationalities come here, we see that some of them seem disinterested in learning English, don't want to mingle with anyone outside their own culture, etc. Therefore, they are in many ways as arrogant and clannish as we are. Somehow, we're going to have to find a way to meet in the middle as the face of American continues to change over the years.
