Anyways, a couple years back my friends were in a band, needed a bass player (no lie) and wanted me to play. Almost the same story as yours. So I had my friend teach me the basics and I learned from there. I bought my own bass, amp, etc. I got bored of it (smoked too much pot) and it's now collecting dust in my closet. What I'm saying is if you are really interested in it, go for it. If your not, it'll be a waste of money in the end.
