Is It Normal?
What do you think?
When is too old?
My family cut off our expanded cable last summer. My sister started watching shows like Fetch With Ruff Ruffman and Maya and Miguel, Curious George, and children shows like that. I told her she was too old for it (she was in 2nd grade and 7) and she says that she knows, she is just watching it because nothing else is on. Well, now that she is in third grade and 8 years old, about to turn nine in 2 months, she is still watching crap like Arthur and Dragon Tales. I tell her those are too young for her, and she gets all defensive and says crap like, "You are never too old for TV shows like this" which I know she is.

Well, anyway, I think it may be degrading her learning skills. She took a math test on problems like 1x1=1 and 0x4=0. She failed it. I know those TV shows are supposed to help kids "learn," but I think she is too old (the website's oldest age group is 2nd graders) and it is ending in negative effects on her learning capability.

Just tell me, is 8 years old too old to be watching stuff like this or am I just being extreme about this?

There's a chance you could be right, but odds are probably not. Watching TV shows like that even at our ages as parents does'nt prevent our learning skills does it? I would say not. Then odds are, probably not even with her then. Let her watch em' until her heart's content, I don't see what it hurts!
Arthur is so bad ass. I still watch that show and I'm 18.
Leave her alone.

If anything, the simpler skills these shows cover will re-enforce what she already knows.

I don't think she is watching them to learn though, she is watching them because she ENJOYS them, so let her be.

If she should start watching Teletubbies, on the other hand.......
