Well it was similar for me in Highschool. In junior high I was pretty popular and part of the cool group, then I changed provinces and at my new highschool I had friends but was less popular. In time I had a small group of friends and a girlfriend. Give it some time and you'll figure things out. Don't be shy. Once you leave highschool things get way better.
Im 24 now and I sleep with so many girls its unfathomable!! Things change as you get older.

I was the exact same way as a freshman. Making close friends doesn't happen in three months. I too had a few people who I hung out with and talked to, but at school. It wasn't until my Junior year that I really had a tight group of friends that actually arranged things outside of school.

Try getting into a sport or activity. You will meet people with similar interests. By the time you're a senior, the kids who were popular as freshmen are often replaced by the people who are involved in school and actually contribute to their community.

You choose your friends, and ocassionally someone might choose you. Look at the people around you, carefully decide who you want to be friends with, and then choose them. Talk to them when you have the chance, and show interest in them. Find out what they do after school. Most people are open to making new friends and wont reject you. If they do, well, then they wouldn't have made a very good friend anyways, so move on. Be patient, true friendship takes years to develop. Here's a hint.. often the most popular people are also the lonliest. They have a huge group of other "popular" people but not many true friends. You might have better luck making real friends outside of the "popular click".

Just be yourself, you said that most of your school mates are popular so without thinking about you might be trying to be something that you're not. Just play it cool. You could even arrange a night at your house, you know, music, dvd's few drinks - just sort it with your parents first
