I personally don't think that a courtesy flush covers up much of the smell. After the turd is in or under the water in the toilet bowl then there is little chance of smells. Most of the smells are likely occurring while the turd is coming out and not in contact with the water. Also, many people do courtesy flushes to cover up any sounds that they may make, and this is likely the driving force behind courtesy flushes, not so much to cover up any smells. I myself do not do courtesy flushes because I think it is is a waste of water.

I agree,^ however I do use the courtesy flush option. I truly don't worry about the waste of water in public places.

What exactly do you mean? Flushing the turd down is nice because nobody wants to see it, but flushing twice doesn't affect the odor.
Incidently, public bathrooms can be very clean places, because they're flooded regularly with chemicals which kill most bacterial life.
