Consumer driven society. This is what people are interested in, and this is what they get. People don't really care about politics or stuff like that, they'd rather see Eva Longoria rooting Tony Parker.
It was never like this before, because the people in charge always constructed what they thought what was important, but once mighty profits come along, then it's just the dumbass breeding bogans from down the street that matter.

They could take the lot of these folks and put them on an island somewhere, and it would mean absolutely nothing to me.

I find it challenging enough to lead my own life, so I don't bother to make time to find out what antics Britney, Paris, or Lindsay are up to. Many of these people seem to represent extremes in excessive, narcissistic, irresponsible behavior, so I find no pleasure in hearing of their latest drug bust, divorce, drunken driving spree, or whatever.

That's why we have remote controls with a jump button to switch between channels. I change the channel when news stations bring up such crap celebrity stories or when the commericals air.

Cause we love watching people who work less hard yet who have more money fuck themselves up. Sadistic pleasure.
