Should or I, or shouldn't I?
Hello fellow IIN members. Got a question for you. Let me first off tell you that, I am going camping at a family owned piece of land in the mountains this weekend. The mounatins you may be thinking of are not the Rocky Mountain type, lol. More like 1500 footers, which are relatively easy to climb. So with that being said, I want to hike to a known dam like just over a mile away from camp. But I want to take just the essentials with me like a compass and a topographical map (topozone.com). I am also thinking of taking a pocketknife and a bottle of water. But what concerns me is that there have been known black bear sightings up in them there hills, lol. But seriously there could be and was wondering, should I really risk it carving my own path so to say and find the dam? Does anyone know how and if black bears attack at certain times/locations?
And also, do you think i should bring anything else along with me? The whole journey should take me about an hour, hour and a half.
So basically, with that all being said, do you think it is safe for me to go? Because I've been up there many times, but not that far, but this visit i want to make something out of it.
Thank you!

Apparently, these bears are more dangerous in some parts of the world than others. I think you're wise to be cautious, and I hope the trip goes well for you.
other than that, bb gun?
Do not ever approach a bear.
Do not ever approach a mother bear.
Do not ever approach a baby bear.
If camping....do not EVER put ANY type of food in your tent.....have a seperate tent at least 100 yards away for the food tent or tie it to a very high tree branch away from your camp.
When hiking, it's a good idea to have some sort of metal can...an empty soda can, or coffee can...anything that when you put either rocks or loose change in it and shake it, it makes loud noises. Why? Because if you're approached by a bear one thing you can do to scare it off is to shake the can and make an unexpected noise that scares the bear away....believe it or not this technique works for almost any wild animal.
Carry pepper spray.
Avoid eye contact with a bear.
Do not ever scream when confronted by a bear....a scream is a challenge to fight for a bear.
Black bears are usually more afraid of you than you are of them, but once in a while you may encounter a bold one which is the reason for using precautions like pepper spray and the metal can noise maker.
Good luck!
