When I was a young lad of 14, I was on this ship. It was a training ship called the T S Arethusa. 240 boys aged 13 to 15. Had some great times there I can tell you. OH THE MEMORIES. I believe this ship has been re named now and is somewhere in New York. Perhaps some of my IIN buddies can confirm this for me? Cant tell you her new name but will check it out and post it in this thread. The sleeping arangements were fun. We all had a hammock which was slung every night between 2 metal rods which ran the length of the lower decks.
In the morning, they were lashed up, taken down and stored in a store room so the deck could be used as a dining area.
She was built by Blom and Voss in Hamburgh Germany in 1912 and was a 4 masted barque. Captured during the first world war, she was offered back to Germany but they refused to take her back for some reason and she was eventualy gifted to a London based charity for use for children in need, as a training ship for those interested in eventually joining the Royal Navy.
