most would say yes that CD are becoming obsolete to MP3 players and flash/thumb drives.
but many people still have and use CDs for storage of music and images. the main draw-backs of CDs are the size, transport and data transfer differences.
CDs are larger, scraches dammages data, slow and harder to transfer data, then flash drives.
CD
Con: scratch, skip, break, get lost, are big and heavy, hard to manage on frequent travels
pro: oooh shiny and album artwork, can't change play order etc
mp3: blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah easy and easy and easy and easy to store thousands of songs...
con- lower quality... but I don't notice much difference
imo cds will become obsolete withtin next 20 years
Almost, unless they are being burned or collected like vinyl. You know they are on the dead end when you can't find the once 1000s of them in pawn shops.
cd will forever be for people like myself who are interested in who wrote the song and info like that.all this anonymous stuff on the net that can be downloaded is just so much crap with no history or info.its music for those who only like music and dont love it.
obsolete or not it doesn't matter, the question is do you want to lug 50 cd's or something the size of a deck of cards around, if your not a dumbass i would think the latter
Sorry for all you CD lovers out there. I will give you a few reasons why Cd sales are going:

Well Limewire is certainly one. DVR is another. And also Mp3's like you said. I mean all those I listed above are big sellers. As more and more people buy mp3's..what good are CD's. CD's can fit a certain amount of songs while MP3's fit thousands! And of course don't forget Limewire. And you know how much everybody uses a computer these days, well everyone just dumps all their songs onto their and plus, what kind of person would want to lug aroudn all of their music on a bunch of CD's. The computer is making it very easy to access and gain music and trust me, the CD industry is suffering.
But of course, CD's will always be around because, yes people will stil want to use Cd's for burning and using it for videos and saving files, etc... Analysts say that CD's peeked in the mid 1990's and with the coming of the 21st century, Cd sales went down as the Apple Ipod came out and limewire, yadda yadda yadda.
To answer your question completely: No I do not think CD's will be totally obsolete.
I think within the next five years, cd albums may become obsolete since you can download music over the internet and select only the songs you want at 99 cents a piece. As far as CD-R, CD-RWs, those probably won't become obsolete for years because you can download MP3s from the internet and burn them to a cd and play the cd in a standard cd player. You can customize the cd to whatever songs you want. CD-RWs are still pretty convenient.
I like the idea of purchasing music without worrying about digital media rights (DMR). If you purchase the CD which provides the best quality sound, then you can rip the tracks on your computer and transfer them to a digital music player. I recently purchased a CD because it wasn't available online, and it was so easy to rip and transfer tracks to my digital music player. It even retained all of the information like the name of the artist, album, tracks, year, etc. If they make CDs obsolete, then I think they should sell a hard copy of the albums on digital cards or other media without DRM on them.
