i would like to know if it is ever normal for a person to talk to themselves. i have a loved one who is worrying me. is this always "the first sign of insanity"? opinions please, thanks.
I sometimes pretend people like me. My friend Leobuttercolonel and I have exquisite "talks" about books.

thanks for the input. he says that he talks to himself to organize his thoughts. sometimes it just seems like he is having a conversation with someone else, but he says he does not hear voices or anything. why can't he just think to himself? occasionally i will make a comment to myself, but i don't go on and on with it... any more opinions? should i get him some help?
This topic always fascinated me. When I was in school some 20 years ago kids would say things like how stupid you were or how crazy you were if you talked to yourself and that has remained the mentallity of most adults. Truly peoples brains don't stop all sound, all thought, all reflection when there mouth shuts. A thousand + thoughts run through everyones mind; memories, analysis, perceptions, what kind of mask we got on and how does it make us look. some people verbalize the conversation to hear over all the other thoughts, the one thought they are on. Some people after thinking inside to themselves discover they like themselves and verbalize outloud as if to a friend. This could be a sign of loneliness of thought; were as they may have many friends they may not feel they can express to them what he can easily share with himself. It can very easily be a sign they are just very comfortable with themselves and unashamed of it. Either way getting to know these people better and talking often with them asking questions and listening may uncover a very wonderfully interesting person.I am a boy and do use the masculine term but this truly applies to both sexes equal. Some people just like to hear themselves talk either reinacting egos from there favorite media character or humored by there own creation although most people think they are original but upon closer examination there influence is easily found. EITHER WHICH WAY I think the craziest person on the planet would be the one whom ignored themselves all the time. I mean how damaging does it have to be to refuse to talk to yourself every day... "I'm not talking to you." "I can't hear you." geeez give me a break... what... oh yeah.... we agree it's crazy to ignore yourself!
Have you ever got on a topic with yourself that just bored the hell out of you... zzz... your STILL talking... geez... don't you ever shut up?! who cares... yeah I know it's not East of the Mississippi... no it don't make sense... look talk to the teacher... I know he didn't write the book... fine look the book says that Oklahoma is the largest state East of the Mississippi as a referance to size... you know like we aint so small see... no Oklahoma is not East of the Mississippi... yes it is confusing I know...AGHHHH... quit shut up you've been talking about this since we got out of the class in 1986... I DONT CARE ANYMORE, SHUT UP!!!!!
well i do that too i suppose, when nobody else is around.
i play little stories of what i think will happen tomarrow in my head and say out loud accedently what i am going to say or whatever.
everyone deals with stress in a different way, as long as you aren't doing something destructive as a coping mechanism than there's nothing wrong with you. i talk to myself all the time, it's just a way of getting everything that's going on all straightened out.
I have stimulating conversations with myself all the time. This is mainly because the population consists of insignificant plebians which do not deserve to be graced with the pleasure of my witty, yet somewhat convoluted conversation.
Well, you see I have a loved one as well, who talks to herself. She is a very sociable person, but feels pretty offended or down when she just thinks people are mad at her, for whatever reason. When I return home from work I always find her on the phone, and immediately will tell the other party as she will call him/her back and hung up the phone. Then, after a little while, I would find her talking to herself, either in the kitchen or in the wash room. Hence, It seems to me that any one who talk to him/her self is violently rapped with guilt, shame, or worry, or all of them.
Trust me, that talking to oneself is not a good sign. You need to ask your loved one to take it easy, by taking him/her away for a vacation and see the difference for yourself.
All right, I guess that, that is all I can say for now. I hope it helps.
What makes you so sure that your not a closed-minded douchebag that makes people feel bad?
I'm going to research this some more before I say anything else, but since you claim to know everything please direct me to where your getting this information from..Think about what you say and what impact it could have on people before you post it..
Selassiay, I want to talk about this topic more because I'm confused about it my self..Some sources of information say that talking to your self is a bad sign, and others say that it's not..
and uh sorry about what i said earlier..i just researched the topic a bit and sleep deprivation is linked to psychosis, i've had a bad sleep schedule for a little while now..time to catch up on that..
Everyone handle stress differently, i do talk to myself sometimes especially when i'm stress, sometimes there are things affecting you that you dont want to share with others but you will rather discuss it by yourself.
I dont think he is crazy.
Plenty of people talk to themselves, it's like thinking out loud. I do it too.
