That letter reads like one long guilt trip, designed to make Amy feel like she's the bad guy. It's been said that we hate others the most when they remind us of our own flaws, and it sounds like that's exactly what Ann is dealing with. Note that Ann starts off talking about her own failings but steadily shifts the blame to Amy as the letter winds on. Amy leaving probably made Ann feel even guiltier and more like a failure, so she's trying to salve her own conscience by guilting Amy into coming home...where the abuse cycle will undoubtedly start all over. Virtually all abusers blame the victim.
