Picking Gums

For some reason, I'm always worried that my gums are getting inflamed and are too big. To counterract this, I pick my gums with a needle or unbent paperclip or any sort of thin metal object. However, I've noticed recently that I've got 6-10 needles next to my computer, and whenever I'm sitting here, I'll find that I have one in my mouth, picking at my gums, whether or not I remember putting it there. Is that normal?
Do you think it's normal?

It sounds like a form of OCD. I don't know if it's something that's going to cause damage in the long term though, for all I know you may have the healthiest gums on the planet right now. Maybe instead of picking at them you can glean them with something else like Listerine of diluted Hydrogen Peroxide (read the bottle for instructions) that way you could do it ten times a day and not be in danger of jabbing yourself with a dirty neddle and getting an infection.

Don't you worry that by sticking sharp objects into your gums, you could actually make them inflamed and swollen? I've always had the compulsion to pop spots with a needle, but have recently contracted impetigo. On my face. So please take my advice and stop, before you have a similar nasty experience
