My boss is a vietnam veteran and he's only got one leg
i saw the stump the other day
and i thought i was gonna puke
i just wanted to chop it off
but that would be redundant
is that normal?
Yes it's normal. It would be the freaiest thing in the world to lose a leg, everyone knows it and I'm sure you know it too. Looking at the stump probably triggers something in the back of your head that imagines would it would be like if it happened to you and it freaks you out, that's all.
Yes, it is normal to be uncomfortable seeing something like this and particularly when you do not understand what happened or what has transpired to result in such a situation.
Limbs have to be removed countless times on an ongoing basis as a result of birth deformities, daily accidents, consequences of war, crimes. Those suffering should not be alienated or shunned by society because of their losses. To do so would be a grave injustice to these victims. Laws are set up to to protect victims but these laws can't make society think or control thoughts or actions for the most part.
Consider riding in a car this week, and being hit by a truck that runs a red light, destroys your vehicle, and crushes your leg. 3/4 of your leg must be amputated for you to survive. After the surgery you have a "stump" for a leg. How would you like to then be treated by the public? by your friends? by your family?
Those who have suffered wish to be treated well, hope you can find the means to do so too and be kind.
