You're probably a musician, aren't you? Although a lot of people hate death metal and black metal, it's a lot closer to classical than pop or any of the other stuff you hear on the radio. Not to mention the fact that most REAL metal bands (or at least the ones i listen to) have lyrics that actually have poetic merit - not just mindless bubblegum pop. There's absolutely no reason to apologize for liking death metal - people wanna say it's depressing because of the "death" aspect. But it's called death metal because they have embraced death - they aren't afraid of it, and they're challenging that common fear.
If you feel like you SHOULD like other forms of music, try this. Try to think of music as just art. Try to appreciate the technical ability of the musicians and vocalists. Or appreciate the vocals. Or appreciate the emotional content of the song. Or appreciate the passion - just appreciate that it's a means of self-expression.
I used to like nothing but metal back when i was a kid. But in college i was introduced to a Russian artist, who sings solely in Russian. I didn't know Russian, so i started thinking of her voice like just another instrument. Somehow that's allowed me to listen to almost every kind of music. I used to hate rap, but groups like the Bone Thugs made me change my mind. Yeah, the Bone Thugs lyrics are pretty much standard "i'm gonna murder you / loadin' my mosberg pump / slangin' rocks" stuff, but i can ignore that and hear how technically talented they are with their voices.
There's tons of music out there that has SOME sort of aspect to appreciate. Poetic lyrics, cool guitar riffs, vocal prowess (like Opeth's lead singer, that goes from deep expansive blackened vocals to an amazing operatic voice), etc...
