Is It Normal?
What do you think?
[Gothic Culture]
I was just wondering what the opinions of some of the people on here are about "gothic culture". I'm a 15 year old, living in a small town, and I have a tendancy to dress outside the norm. I wear black lipstick, I hardly wear any colour outside of red and deep purple, other than that black is the main shade of my clothing. My hair, though, is bleach blonde and I try and make my own clothes as much as possible, because I'm against mass production. So here's my question:

Has how I dress become my way of life? Just because I choose to wear black lipstick, and outrageous outfits, I'm now being labeled, and am being called a "goth" when half the people who call me that have no idea of the word's origanal origin.

For those of you who don't know- the word can mean a various amount of different things. In recent years it has been tied to a subculture of people who wear darker clothes, and enjoy morbid outlooks on life. Based on horror movies and music.

Back when the word started it had to do with renessance (shakespearian times). Mostly the literature, and archetecture. It also had to do with Germanic Tribes/Cults who commited mass murders, which was what I had first learned the word as. So I am now being reffered to as a murderer.

I have chosen, for the time being and possibly the next five years of my life on earth to dress the way I do, or vagely similar to the way I do now. Will I always be labeled as I am? And have to deal with the immaturity I'm shown now? Will the comments and the immaturiry get any better? I'm asking from your point of view.

Tomorrow: You see a bleach blonde wearing black lipstick, thick black and red eyeliner, all black clothing very obviously home made, and smiling. (Because yes, I DO smile, and I DO enjoy life.) What would your first thought be? Be honest.

- Please. No immature less than 17 year old who don't have anything relevant to say. I get that enough. If you feel the need to insult me, please use something origanal. I'm quite sick of having 'wow, I didn't know it was halloween yet, FREAK!' yelled after me. Thank you.

First impressions,
It's a fact of life that people will judge you about the way you look, until they get to know you personally.

Keep on smiling!
I personally like the gothic culture. I think it's interesting, I like the music and some of the kindest people I know were part of that scene in high school. I say, enjoy it while you can. Realistically, when you're done high school and you start College or University, you'll have to let it go. Otherwise, you'll never get a job. But, this is your chance to enjoy it so I say go for it! :)

I disagree with itfalls. I think seriously "gothic" people don't and can't just phase out of being who they are for college or a job. Maybe some of the fashion will go, but it hasn't at all for my friend who's a girl. I'm in college. I am, at the same time, doing well with teaching 3D animation. As a male, I've never been into black nail polish, symbols, or Satan, but I'm helplessly melancholic, wear black because I like it, and appreciate dark music with my jazz and classic rock. I love life too and am not an unhappy person. Whatever constitutes goth should be broadly defined more as a state of mind, but is commonly unified by music and fashion and perhaps an enjoyment of morbidity. It sounds like you aren't the kind of kid who would go around trying to tell people crappy death jokes or go for shock value, so you're probably fine. It sounds like you're concerned with labels and jokes. Normal, but why worry? As for seeing said person, I'd probably be impressed if Hot Topic wasn't involved.

I dont know much about gothic but I see them around and I thing gothic chicks look HOT

Wikipedia on Corporate Goths:
Though some goths gravitate toward workplaces that allow a great deal of personal expression, or simply do not care what employees look like, others work in the corporate sector where certain dresscodes are enforced. They usually add a gothic twist to their ensembles; some would say they wear corporate gothwear, which satisfies gothic tastes in fashion without alienating more mainstream and conservative co-workers, as well as keeping with management policies. Corporate gothwear varies based on individual taste, though a David Bowie influence is often prevalent, as well as 1920s through 1960s styles. Examples include, but are not limited to, a black pinstripe suit and burgundy shirt for men and a black turtleneck and skirt or suit with silver jewelry for women.

A recent study by Sussex University suggests that goths are likely to grow up to be doctors, lawyers or architects, and that goths are usually intelligent, refined and sensitive, and keen on poetry and books.
What's the point?
People should dress the way they want to be judged. If your mode of dress suggests a certain stereotype, you should expect that other will view you accordingly.

If someone dresses in the fashion of a certain stereotype then complains about the people who automatically place him therein, he is seeking attention or trying to make some point.

Fine. Point taken.
where do u live?

goth
im not gothic, im just a girl who doesnt wear all the girl xlothes, i wear like i guess boy clothes if it is jeans and a tee, well mi friend is a total goth and she is soooooo nice, being goth doesnt make you evil or the devils children(aspeoplethink)i think if you lett people know who you really are theyll accept you for more than you look like out side, then inside.(oh ya, u know when u said u dont want any people under17 making comments, well, im 12, but im not immature)
i don't believe in labels,
only because i get labled all the time.
my style has changed from the so called "goth" look to the so called "emo" look, i dress in what i feel comfortable in
which can go from an all black outfit with a crazy hairstyle and makeup job, which i love or a casual sweatpants and big sweater with a simple ponytail. I'm not a "poser" or a "Fake"
i think you should tell everyone to get off your back and you should keep on smiling and wear whatever you want to :}

oh and society today finds the "gothic" or the "emo/punk" look is "not right" or "abnormal"
its the way they look at it,
most people automatically thinks "well that person obviously drinks alot" or "that person obviously does drugs"
or something similar
i thin people just need to get used to the fact that not everyone who wears a fair amount of makeup or dresses in clothes that their kids don't wear are druggies or not good people. it will take time but hopefully we can all just get along after a while.
I'm under 17, does that mean you don't care about what i think?
And i have know two girls that were considered to be goths, one of them just started to wear black and heaby makeup and everything out of the blue and started saying she was a goth (altough she really didn't have the dark nature) and another that always wore black and make up but never talke about herself as a goth and had a sunny disposition. But she was a satanist (if that's a word) and did drugs so i woudl have to say she was a goth (altough i'm not saying she was a goth because she did drugs).

And a bit of a joke insult (just to try).
Satan doens't love you :P.
Why are you trying to prove yourself? I suppose you believe you are above their maturity. You become mature when your aura resonates with your personality and assurance. If you LET them bother you are nave. Some will believe you say who you are but they are children same as those who redicule you.

If I spyied a blonde, lip-sticked child with thick eyeliner, I would be dissapointed with the child's mother for not watching her child in her mischief.
well.
im emo.
thats kind
of the same
aint it guys?
I didn't mean if your under 17 I wouldn't value your comment if it was legit. I just meant, I don't want some 10 year old going "u suck, grr" as a comment. You know? And I know satan doesn't love me, Satan doesn't exist in my world :)
Sorry, but I find that quite offensive. Me and my mother don't tend to get along, but the way I dress has no reflection on how she raised me. I'm not some hooligan who wanders around the streets in the little hours of the morning smoking or shooting up. I'm normally at home, or with friends, drawing or singing or writing poetry. My mother does watch out for me, and is quite strict with what I can and cannot do. She has, in fact, tried to not allow me my freedom of expression, and it failed- obviously, because I'm strong willed and I stand for what I beleive in.
I don't believe I'm above anyones mautrity at all, either. I believe that I can be mature when it's called upon, and yes sometimes more mature than the people that yell 'goth' and 'slut' from down the street. But I do realise that I'm only 15 and I'm not the most mature person in the world, nor do I know as much as anyone older than I am. But that's just how I am, is it a crime to try and act my age, and be mature at the same time?
"well.
im emo.
thats kind
of the same
aint it guys?"

Emos can suck my ass.
@: Satan
