Is It Normal?
What do you think?
Atheist who reads the Bible
Hey

I don't believe in God. I'm not religious or spiritual at all. But I read the Bible regularly. Perhaps it's because I went to Catholic school. But I wonder why I read it. I find it fascinating and I find truth in it. But I don't believe in God, so how can this be?

Once, I was eating lunch in a resturant with a friend and we were talking about passages and I was quote scripture. A women next to me over heard me and was apparently impressed by my knowlegde of the Bible and asked me what parrish I belonged to. She was shocked when I told her I didn't even believe in God. She told me Christ Jesus was the light and the way. But I didn't believe her.

Is this normal? To find truth in the Bible yet not believe in fundamental beliefs of Christianity like the resurrection or trinity?

the one who wrote the bible just stole everything or invented it
so possibly there is truth in it, between fiction and nothingness
i am a atheist and i find the bible a good work of fiction

You probably like the language written in the Bible and the moral aspects of it that inspires you.
I bought the satanic bible, because it makes more sense than any other book Ive read. But I don't brand myself a satanist, so yeah its normal
By "Bible", are you including the "new" testament (compiled at the council of nicea), or just referring to the original five books (dictated by G-d)?
I don't believe that the Bible can offer any objective truth about a God or anything diretly related. This does not mean that I cannot be moved by the writing, or find truth in the text. The Bible when taken apart is an ethical guide. One does not need to believe the mythical stories in order to agree that the messages at the route of these stories are good messages. The Bible, in my opinion, is an excellent piece of literature, and I can understand why you enjoy reading it.
It makes sense, but it's also a disgusting insult to every Christian and Jew.
I read it and I'm atheist. For the atheist jsut treat it like any fiction book.
The bible was never meant to be a religious book, it was originally written as a political satire by jewish holymen, just take the genesis for example adam and eve went on to have over 500 kids, thats one every 6 months... and they still have to be 250 years old
the bible's a good moral code...along with almost any religious text. even if you think the shit about god holding you accountable for your actions isnt true, u still have a moral conscience
i dont belive in god too cuz there no magic like whossssssssssssss

screw your best friend

You want to know the problems with EVERYONE... They need to educate themselves before they talk about something like this. (im not talking to whoever posted this...)
Well, maybe it's like Aesop fables. The point is weather or not they actually happened, the point is the moral. Besides, the Bible is full of sex and violence. And it's not just the "bad guys" doing all the sex and violence.

Also, allot of Atheist read the Bible, mainly so we can argue with it.

I've also read Dracula.
As for what milte (4365) said,
it's Theists like HIM that are getting people killed by the millions even as we speak.
I agree with some parts, like not building houses where you'll get flooded, but disagree with other parts, like Trial Wives, mass deaths, etc.
No I agree with you, its normal.
I believe everything should be taken with a grain of salt. I would rather be shown to be cynical than foolish by a long shot.

There are good morals in religious texts, but there are not-so-publicised aspects and many things that go agaist modern decency. I also will not treat others badly because of laws written in the bible, partially because I believe that it was written by man, and if there is a god, I would love to believe he is not as petty as the judeo-christian god is made out to be.
I would rather search for my own personal enlightenment then be bound to a book I believe to be a tool of man.
I don't think you have to believe in god to be able to find (some) of the passages from the bible useful: after all, it's one of the oldest books ever written by men so most of the topics it covers should still apply to us today. People are always basically the same, we pursue the same things as our great great grandparents did and as our children will (love, sex, happines, wealth, etc.) and these are all topics covered by the bible. You might agree or disagree with what you find there, but at least you'll find a lot of interesting things.

I'm also an atheist who enjoys reading the bible. I find it really amusing and sometimes even enlightening (leaving all the GOD stuff aside).
inventions are made by its inventors
if you believe that there's no GOD
then what supernatural power that made you exists
nah its normal
im an atheist i am reading the bible also here and there
though my reasons differ from yours
i read the bible because it feels hypocritcal that i do not believe in the bible without fully reading it
also i read it for when a religious arguement sprouts i can bring up passages from the bible
but i believe there is a bit of truth in everything
i believe we can all learn a thing or two from the bible whether we believe in it or not

but i would say dont stop there
why not try reading other religions along with the bible??broaden your horizon
i recomend tao to read , it is full of philosophies
@: santi
Athiests do not believe in a supernatural power at all. What don't you get?
Better to be well read and be able to argue your cause than to go in blindly.

I am not athiest, but I don't have a religion. I believe in a higher power. I have never read the bible. You're one up on me.

Are you into science? Rationalizing is totally normal.
dude, im an athiest, i jus find the whole god thing hard to believe, i personaly dont find the bible that interesting, but even so, it basicly holds good morals of what people should do, my conclusion, its a good book in general. =P
It is normal because it does provide many universal truths and moral lessons, whether or not you believe that the stories are based on factual events.
You may be surprised, but the majority of Atheists actually know the bible better than the average majority of Christians.
If you are readinf the book yu are getting the knowledga! Thus you wil be judges on judgement day for what tyou know, or should have known! That fact that you read thehj Bible leads me to believe you seek the truth and the rtruth you seek can only be ound in the BIBLE!!!

GOOD LUCK on your journey!
My opinion?
Congratulations! You're an agnostic!
Alot of atheists read the bible so we can debunk religion. If you read it, you'll see that jesus lied quite a few times. At one point he stats that whatever you pray for you get.
It's perfecrtly fine, theres nothing wrong with learning about other religions out there.
I read much of the bible out of interest.

Thats when I decided to worship the Great White Rodent instead.
many a soul has the read the bible 10 times in one year, and they'll never get the real messages it contains.

-dirt dobbler
I've read the bible and studied it for years... every time I read a bit of it I become a bit more disheartened.
Thanks.
