What I don't believe is that this is usually derived from malicious intent, but it seems to be a part of the personality of such individuals, since manipulation does seem to be a large part of human nature. I have found that the only way to avoid these situations of manipulation is to avoid the individuals that possess such powers of manipulation, or just be flat out rude to them.
