Usually, when someone says that a relationship is "too much" for them, it's a euphemism for some other emotion that they either don't want to admit or don't understand. It's possible, though, that all the two of you really needed was a breather and some time to experience some mutual growth. Unfortunately, it's difficult for people to grow in the same direction, I've found. My advice would be to keep an open mind and be honest in your relationship. Dishonesty is at the heart of most relationship problems because people fear pain. But since dishonesty ultimately causes pain, you're much better off cutting through the bullshit and being who you really are!
