Many nights we hear the county sheriff's helicopter hovering overhead, either broadcasting the facts about a lost child or casting a search light into the yards and streets around me. One afternoon, several sheriffs pounded on my door and demanded to search my backyard -- seemed some hoodlum was on the run and they thought he was hiding in my garbage can. Anyway, this sort of thing never gets easy to live with. At your age, I would definitely recommend against a gun for some of the reasons you've already read here. Get some advice from your family and/or local law enforcement types to get suggestions on appropriate protection. Just be very careful and try not to stress about it. You could maybe get some very high quality ear plugs.
