You should give it a go. If he's as great as you think he is and you both get each other, then you should be able to come up with some feelings pretty quick.

I think you should remain friends a little longer until you know exactly how you feel about him. You say "my feelings are not as strong as his" which means when you get into a relationship it could turn out you don't like him as much as you thought and he could end up being the one who gets hurt.
