Is It Normal?
What do you think?
detailed M&M color analysis
I separate my M&Ms by color, line them up in order of decresing frequency, do a quick mental comparison with the way it turned out in previous bags, and always take a few minutes to ponder what "random" really means.

When I eat Spree (or Sweetarts, or Starburst--anything in a tube, really) I unwrap them one at a time, mentally count out "red... green... red... yellow... orange... yellow" etc. as I eat them.

I get really happy when there are multiple reds in a row, sort of like getting three cherries on a slot machine. I get irritated when it keeps turning up yellows.

In a sense normal
If you have strong habits other than this one, you may be obsessive-compulsive. Not the end of the world or anything, but if any habits hinder you then you could talk to a psychiatrist about it.

Just different
Everyone's brain is wired differently, things that excite one person, do nothing for someone else. Your brain seems to like finding order in chaos, or patterns in the abstract. It could be obsessive-compulsive as stated above, but I'd only worry about it if it starts to interfere with your quality of life. If it's not hurting you, then I hope you have a 5 red's in a row kind of day :)

Green
Green is the only way to go. With red, there are so many residual affects. Three greens in a row and my week is going very well. When I get reds, even two in a row, I cannot leave the house for fear of reprocussions. This is not baseless. Once after having 2 reds in a row a checker at the grocery store was so dismissive of me I had to yell at her. She called the manager and I ran out of the store, and I forgot my bags. I just know that if I had greens that day, that would not have happened. Now I don't go in that store anymore because they will have my picture at the front. They don't let you get away with things like that anymore.

from the original poster
I'm the original poster. To the dude above: well, I never read *that* much into it.

To the first guy: this is my only OCD-like symptom. Er, except tidying the house when I'm nervous (which is far more of a help than a hindrance, trust me!)

The fact that I spent three years as a junior research analyst at an international think tank known for its work with statistics and game theory might-- just MIGHT-- be a contributing factor here.

I swear, if all y'all had to take as much game theory and econometrics PhD coursework as I did, you'd be counting your M&Ms too.

order
Since about the 4th grade I've counted the letters in all the things I and others around me say. Lately it's progressed into signs, books and anything around me with letters.
Originally I was trying to even out the sentences so that they all had even numbers in them. Now I just count and I seriously can't stop. It doesn't really cause much trouble except sometimes in conversations I don't listen to people because I'm counting what they're saying.

I do that too!! It all started when I was like 5 and I used to play Magic Stars memory with my mom. I still do it =) along with a lot of other stuff =) if you don't know what magic stars memory is, its like the card game memory, but you play with the different faces on Milky Way Magic Stars =) I dunno if you can get them in America though...

Have you read "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time"? The red and yellow thing is present there, too.
Mate, I'm pretty sure you're autistic or have OCD. My uncle is like that, he can do 2000 word or so jigsaws upside down in about 5 minutes. Nothing to worry about really.
Nobody gives a ratīs ass.

I'm a bit like that too. I seperate my Smarties/ M&Ms / Any kind of candy that comes in different colours. I only eat the orange, purple, pink and blue ones, and give the green red brown and other colours to whoever wants them. I also clean when I'm nervous, but I don't think I have OCD.
