Is It Normal?
What do you think?
Correct spelling and grammar
Whenever I read any article or forum post online, I get really irked by people starting sentences without capitals, bad grammar, and incorrect punctuation. Furthermore, I judge the writer of the article based on this; someone more articulate and erudite in their dialogue will likely find favour with me, while I will treat people that are more lax with their spelling and grammar as being a short of a few brain cells.

Is this healthy? Does anyone else do this? Should I throw myself off the nearest tall building for being so damn prejudiced?

There's nothing wrong about being pedantic about spelling and grammer. Language is regressing and personally I wish automatic spellcheckers existed that'd at least clean up the filth that mostly appears on text messages. We judge people all the time, it's easy to appear intelligent by being articulate (sp?) so it seems a sensible thing to do.

LOL to the last post but I do empathise with your position. I switch off if I can't immediately read somebody's post.

A lot of the worlds problems arise from bad communication and it doesn't take much extra effort to do it right, so do it right, right?

Ooh... you even used a semi-colon. Damn that's sexy.

I feel for you; after all, I'm like that too.

It's understandable to disregard people with very coherent arguments when their spelling and grammar are atrocious. If they have enough brain cells to formulate such an elaborate thought, then surely they are capable of using proper spelling and grammar as well. Otherwise, their schooling (assuming they had some) was wasted.

Teacher??
I hope you are not a teacher, or an editor. If you are, then JUMP!
@: LMAO
I happen to agree with you. I do note, however, that you have asked 3 questions, the last of which would contradict the other 2, whether someone agrees with you or not. As in; yes it is healthy, yes I also do it, so no, don't jump of a bridge. That annoys me more; not following the rules (or guidelines) set down. An intelligent point, even if badly presented, is still relevant. Lack of observation is much less forgivable.
Actually, now I feel silly. The question is: Is it normal? Not the poster's questions at the end of his post. See, lack of observation, very bad.
im am very upset that u are so prejadised at me and peaple who canut spell wel; snot are falt and we are very inteligant and u are not so sotp being nasty and gte a lief. LOSAR!!!!1

mad
u say u get mad at people for spelling wrong but sometimes even when they type all the letters they don't appear from not pressing the button hard enough. u spelled favor wrong just to let u no. since u get mad at everyone else
I am also like this. However, there are some exceptions. Certain words can be abbreviated, and some of the finer points of grammar can be overlooked. People should make an attempt to make things proper, but they don't have to get it right every time. Favour is the British spelling.

You are not the only one who feels like this. I have made two posts about similar subjects. I can overlook a couple spelling errors, or typographical errors seeing as how proof reading once might not catch it, but I can't stand the fact that no one even makes an effort to look, or sound intelligent.
hey
favour is the canadian and british way to spell favor(american)

I love you! I am also a pedant! Thank you for hating the lazy and stupid, for I do it too!
I have this exact same problem. If someone types using abbreviations like "u, r, y, ur," or types in 1337, etc, I can't help but feel as if they aren't very intelligent. Also, I hate it when people mix up "there, their, and they're."

I'd like tooffer a giggle to everyone who offered a bit of comic relief on this subject. You all are really funny. In my opinion unless you are writing or reading something proffesional, I wouldn't worry about it. I always feel as long as I understand what the person is saying, I don't care about spelling and grammar. I think theres nothing wrong with taking a short cut. Again when it comes to proffesionalism and something of importance thats when you need to type properly. I think these message boards are fun, and its ok. I'm sure you understand what I'm saying, and my paragraph is choc full of mistakes. I dont care though. For I am not being paid, and nothing is to come of this. I think you are normal, but try not to care too much. You'll go insane.
Oops
Perhaps you should irk yourself, since there is a glaring grammatical error in your post. "Someone more articulate...in their dialogue..." should be "someone more articulate...in his dialogue...".

Seriously it bothers me too...a little. I'm not going to waste my time writing a perfectly punctuated "is_it_normal" to try and show off my new thesaurus. Yea, I can use big words too but why would I waste my time. Get a life and sucked it up.

it's annoying isn't it...
but lighten up! Just know that people are judging you for your inadequacies as well (and probably hate you for them, too).
yes normal
very common. But it depends on how much error you allow before you get frustrated. There are many intelligent people who are dyslexic. Albert Einstein, and Edison and Mozart. So it is pretty clear that even if you spell badly you arent necesserely stupid. But it can be irritating though.

Glad to see so many well typed posts in the comments, which is -not normal- of this webpage sadly. Anyway, a couple typos, typical misspellings or something minor like incorrect grammer I can overlook, as I too am a violator of that crime being dyslexic myself.

However, even the abberation of some words are really uncalled for. Such as "u" for "you" and "r" for "are" is complete and total lack of intelligence. Its not to type faster either, considering its only two more freaking letters.

Periods are your best friend. PLEASE use them. Also see the little space I left up there? You should, its called making paragraphs so your text is easier to read.

The bottom line is this:
If someone is unwilling to even attempt to use even the most minor forms of the english language such as period and forming semi-coherent sentances, then they are not worth any time to deal with. I don't know how many times I've left comments where the only advice I can give is "Learn English"

I blame the schools.
I totally agree. It is pathetic to see people who cannot even use the most basic rules of the English language, or make themselves understandable. I don't even waste my time on those people, and the people who try to write in all slang ghetto crap, leet speak, or initials/letters, etc. To all those people: YOU LOOK LIKE MORONS! Nobody take you seriously! I'm not unreasonable, people make typos and mistakes, nobody is perfect, but when everything you put out there looks like it was written by a retarded 3-year-old, then you have a problem! Good grammar, spelling, and punctuation cannot hurt you, it can only HELP you! If you turn in a job application written in that crap, they will laugh you out of the room, and hire someone with a brain. It just makes you look like you cannot learn, like you're stupid to have gone through 12 years of school and STILL not know the basics of the language! Damn, some people are idiots though!
I agree wholeheartedly, although I'm surprised at how many people share this view! People who refuse to spell appropriately must be stupid, otherwise they would have realised by now that poor spelling and grammar instantly remove and credibility they would have otherwise. Besides, this is not a nasty kind of predjudice, like denying a black person a job purely due to their skin colour; it is a fair predjudice based in fact, not defunct ancient tradition or stereotype. If more people could see this, the internet would be a better (and considerably more legible) place.
Look how smart everyone sounds here all of a sudden.

You are prejudiced.

Just because someone hasn't developed any typing or computer skills doesn't mean they aren't capable of expressing a legitimate opinion, here or anywhere else. It doesn't mean they can't spell or use grammar and syntax properly- when you write on paper you don't need to hold shift to captialize, or any other fucked witchcraft involved with typing.

Some people speak much more eloquently and coherently than they can express on paper. People that exercise the rules of grammar and spelling online may be clumsy and stumble with words when spoken aloud.

Typing online, oral expression, and writing are all very different skills. If someone is good at one, it isn't necessary that they excell in the others. The same can be said vice versa. It's natural to be partial with those that obey grammar and spelling online simply because their text is easier to read, but don't assume those with poor typing skill are completely ignorant.

Rage&Hate, school hasn't changed. The internet is a huge influence. Back in the day, there were no computers to fuck up the art of language, but now there are. I highly doubt they'll be instating a "Proper Technique of Expression in Forums" course in school. Communication on the internet isn't dependent on spelling and grammar, especially between teenagers over instant messengers and chatrooms.
Yes,I agree...but I do it al the time..so im a hypocrite.
hell yeah i've been doing as long as i can remember and i'm only 14. i don't do just on the internet either. but i'm not so much with the capitals.
I especially hate "Urbanese"

They think it looks cool, but they are doing a disservice to their own people by butchering the english language like a bus full of speds.
@: Potato
I take that back, speds can write much better than that.
