I don't get it either, I think it comes down to shear inexperience. Someone said earlier on one of the posts that girls go for the bad boys because they think they can help them. I like to think I'm a nice guy, and I'm appalled by some of the stuff women put up with from their boyfriends. Maybe it's a power trip, I don't know, it really doesn't make much sense to me.

Many girls like to go after guys who have problems to feel a sense of power and control. They like the thrill of "fixing" a guy who often is desirable in appearance but lacking in maturity/responsibilities. These girls tend to lack self confidence to carry on a relationship with a guy who does not have issues, and is responsible and caring. So, the girls choose a problem guy despite knowing it is prone to failure.

I also disagree with your premise in stating that guys are jerks or girls moreover treat guys like crap.

There are plenty of those people that in fact fit these descriptions, but it is everyones responsibility to pick and choose wisely. No one is pointing a gun to your head to have a relationship with a jerk, it is your decision and get what you desire.

Very early on while dating, there are red flag warning signs if something is seriously wrong with a person. It could be rudeness, aggressiveness, insensitivity, selfishness, manipulativeness, etc. etc. If you see such warning signs, do not ignore them, do not dismiss them. Instead simply avoid the person again and politely say no thank you if they ask to see you again.

Simple enough, no excuses for anyone.
