"It" in time

Any ideas as to what "it" means in the sentence "What time is it?"?

It means the time, because "what time is it?" is really just an improper form of "what is the time?"

and what do you get if you put the i and the t together= it.
yes, "it" is a pronoun for the word "time" in that sentence
