Is It Normal?
What do you think?
Driving me nuts
2 of my co-workers (mother and daughter) are driving me crazy. Both of them are always talking about how sick they are all the time. The daughter is only 22 and theres no way she can be as sick as she claims to be. Example...You say you have a headache, they have one. You say you have a cold, they have one. The daughter claims she has no feeling in her one finger but uses it all the time. They both say they have major asthma but smoke like chimneys. I also met their family. The father is in crutches one day, a wheelchair another, and walking fine another day! All I hear about all day is how sick they are and about their past illnesses. Is it normal to lie about being sick for attention?

Trifecta!
They sound like a house full of loonies! I don't know how you can stand two of them in the office. I work with one and she drives me nuts!
There is a mental illness where you always think you are sick. People who have it are called Hypochrondiacs or some such thing. If someone mentally thinks that there is something wrong with them, often times their body will comply. It makes sense to me that it would be passed down from one generation to the next, because when I am tld something about how I might be sick, I start to worry.
Some people crave attention and know they will get it this way. Their 'me too' for your headache or your cold is a clue. Could it be comradery (sympathy sickness) or one-upmanship? Maybe they are sick or think they are, and love to talk about it. These two ladies seem to take much satisfaction in it though. They wear it like a badge of honour for all to respect. The father could be really sick possibly. Who knows?
We all worry about getting sick, and react in some way at its suggestion. To worry is normal but a complete check-up can alleviate ones fears. It must be awful to endure their complaining everyday. You are probably in more pain than they are!
I know a family just like that. They crave attention - daughter in this case is a musician, so she is normally center stage anyway. Just ignore their complaining or change the subject to something else. I've done it with these people and it seems to be getting a little better.
Or you can just tell it to their face that they are arenīt really sick or in pain,
but just lying about it.

Sounds like hypochondria. Which is an illness, by the way, but a psychological one.

I know a family like this. It sounds as if they are competeing with each other in a childish game of "who can be the sickest"....although they might not realize that cognitively.
