Adult Shampoo Making Kids Blind

I was giving a bath to my four year old son. We ran out of his "children's shampoo", so I just used a small bit of regular (Head and Shoulders-Dandruff) shampoo. While I was rinsing out his hair, he got a little in his eyes. It stung and he started screaming. His mother burst into the bathroom, started screaming and yelling at me, and informed me that using adult shampoo on a 4 year old can blind them. I felt horrible, I really didn't know.

She yanked him up and out of the bathtub, shampoo-still-in-hair, and proceeded to frantically wipe the shampoo out of his hair and off his face with a towel.

After giving it some thought, I checked the Warning label for any specifics about blindness... there were none. Also, I could not think of any instance where an adult blind person traced their handicap back to shampoo.

Additional Info:

1) I use dandruff shampoo because I like the smell better than regular head and shoulders. I do not have dandruff.

2) My wife is positive that it's the anti-dandruff chemical that causes the blindness.

3) Later, when I questioned my wife as to why it wasn't on the Warning label, she didn't have an answer.

4) If you are male and you are reading this, my best advice is to not get married or have children. This is what it is all about. A crying kid and a pissed off wife on a Friday night... because of shampoo.

=========================================

I will definitely not use the adult shampoo from now on, because the children's shampoo won't sting his eyes; however, blindness is a lot different from stinging. In the comments, please tell me if anyone else has ever heard of this.

Is her reaction normal??

Well I'm sure they wouldn't sell shampoo if it made u blind!!! Yes kids shampoo maybe milder but I think shampoo causing blindness is a little of an over exaggeration !!

Agreed ^

Also, you seem to be just as big of a drama queen as your wife. "Don't get married or have kids"? Really, that's just ridiculous.

Just my advice, I'm not being dramatic. I was warned by at least 20 different men (both related and non-related) while I was growing up; I didn't listen. I just want others to learn from my mistakes.

BTW, the use of the word "drama queen" is more dramatic than need be.

wow your wife sounds like a psycho. i dont agree with your comment about not getting married and having kids, just get married and have kids to the right woman who is not mental like your wife. its never good to wrap your children in cotton wool like she obviously has. they are going to be so screwed up later in life. i feel sorry more for your child than anything.
btw my husband uses kids shampoo because its shampoo and conditioner in one and that stings my eyes even though it says no sting formula. just be a little bit more careful about not getting the suds in your kids eyes. IF you are allowed to touch your child again.... seriously, your wife is psycho.

ppl need to relax. yeah her reaction was over the top, but i think thats just typical mom. sometimes they get a little over prtective of their children but it just means she cares about her family.

His mother is not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

It will cause stinging and burning. But. I have never heard of actual blindness.

Typical "middle aged" woman for ya..they get crazy !
Give her til about 50 , until then good luck man

That is just dumb. I'm sorry but that is completely false, the shampoo part not the crazy lady part. The crazy part is all too real :)

She's overreacting. I mean i would say baby shampoo would still mess w ur kids eyes as well, I got some " adult shampoo " in my eyes before, and just felt all" minty" Kinda like these eye drops I've taken that are really strong amd feels like you are using mouthwash on your eyes. Next time have her wash the kid from now on. And hope she don't have her share of mistakes with the baby and if she does get all psycho about it hahaha nah jk

I've never heard of shampoo's causing blindness. Wash your eyes with water and maybe put on some eyedrops and you'll be fine. Maybe if you get shampoo in your eyes every day you might go blind at some point.
It's interesting how she didnt wash the shampoo off him tho'. Sounds like you've got kindof a bitch of a wife. Sorry.

She overreacted but you should not be using dandruff shampoo on a child. It can highly irritate their delicate skin and some contain zinc which can be pretty painful.

She overreacted. No, you can't blind the poor child. It's just shampoo.

Shampoo doesn't kind blindness. The difference is is that kids shampoo doesn't sting and adults does. His mom sounds really stupid you should prove to her that she is wrong and make her feel like a dumb bitch.

I use head n shoulders and if I get it in my eyes it stings really bad.

No company would sell a product that's somewhat likely to get into eyes if it could cause blindness. Imagine the lawsuits! You're wife was just being a controlling b*tch. I'm a woman and I think it's just in our genes.

The medical prescription, and or the ones the surgeons use will! Adult or child it will make you blind! And I like your advice lol.

Thank you for all of your responses. It seems my wife is just crazy. I did email P&G afterwards (in case anyone was wondering) and this is an excerpt from their response...

....Our products and packages are thoroughly evaluated to be safe when used as directed. Additionally, we maintain an ongoing safety monitoring program to assure the highest standards of safety and quality. Please be assured I'm sharing your comments with our Health and Safety Division. Meanwhile, please hold on to the package and any remaining product for two weeks in the event our Health and Safety Division needs to retrieve them.

We don’t have any knowledge that Pyrithione Zinc causes blindness. We do ask that you keep away from your eyes because the dandruff medicine that’s in our shampoo can sting really badly once in your eyes....

I think your wife just needs a table spoon of concrete

Wow. Your wife is crazy. She should be happy that you are at least helping with your son. My husband will only give my 4 year old daughter a bath if he has no choice because I'm not home and even then sometimes he'll just leave it for me to do in the morning. Please don't let her discourage you from helping to take care of your son. Get rid of the wife lol.

Your wife is nuts. Shampoo may hurt a baby a lot, but never blind them.
Comment Hidden (show)
lol calm down. so your wife made a pretty stupid mistake...
Comment Hidden (show)
stinging, yes. BLINDNESS, no. I remember getting adult shampoo in my eyes(which I have done with no warning of blindness since age 6), and I am not blind.

NO...... NO...............NO..............

I use baby shampoo cause it's a little better for your hair. Plus it smells good :)
Comment Hidden (show)
honestly, thats dumber than saying mastirbation causes blindness. Yes, head and shoulders isnt good for kids, or the eyes, but it will just irritate them. Now, if you dont wash it out though, it can damage the eye, but it would take a while

Most of the shampoo and conditioner out there has cancer causing ingredients. Try something more natural and plant based a good list can be found at www.choosecrueltyfree.org.au plus there products are not tested on animals. Johnson and Johnson and loreal are two of the worst companies for cancer filled products and animal testing.

I have to weigh in on this one. Shampoo is alkaline, stronger than soap, but not as strong as bleach. Blind, probably not, but this happened to me as a child (Pantene ProV shampoo)and I ended up with a chemical burn on my corneas that scarred, so my vision is permanently distorted like speckled TV snow superimposed over everything. Because of the scar texture, tears won't hold to my corneas properly so I have to use lipid based eye drops 5 times a day for the rest of my life. It also caused inflammation on the ciliary nerves(controls your pupils)so my eyes are sensitive to light now. Eyes don't grow back. once they're damaged, it will never go back to normal. Your wife may have overreacted, keeping calm when this happens is important, but she wasn't wrong about eye damage. I'll mention the shampoo exposure I had was substantial, my mom put the shampoo in my eyes deliberately as punishment for not taking to bath when I was told. My advice, apologize to your kid first, then your wife, and be more careful next time, if there is a next time.
