As a child, I had Nightmares About Driving, and Now I Can't Drive

Well, the title is pretty explanatory, but in the duration of my childhood, I always had nightmares about driving; in the earliest one that I can remember, I would be in the car with my family, on a curvy road in the woods, and then suddenly realize that my younger brother and I were the only ones in the car, and I (having no knowledge of driving a car) would have to take the wheel.
This scared the shit out of me, of course.
The other dreams were usually somewhat similar.
Now I'm a teenager, and I can't drive. I don't know why, but I just can't do it. Or, I can't do it RIGHT, I should say.
I'm such a terrible driver that my driver's ed teacher told me not to take the test with the rest of my group, and to wait until I got better. When my driving group did the road drives, he didn't even let me steer on the freeway drive, I just had my foot on the gas pedal.
It's a really sucky situation, and I hate that I'm so terrible at it.
I was wondering if my childhood nightmares of driving could be linked to my current driving issues, and maybe where this could stem from.
So if there are any psychologists out there who might like to answer my questions, feel free to comment.

Stupid to let THAT stop you from living your life
I had dreams about dying, I'm alive.
I had dreams about drowning, I swim.
I had dreams about being diseased, I'm healthy.
Thank God. Take these things as warnings at the least, but don't ever let it conquer you.

I agree, driving sucks!

I know exactly how you feel! I'm 20 and I can't drive because of this massive fear I have. It didn't start because of dreams for me but because I've had some very bad experiences during driving lessons and since then I haven't been able get behinda wheel without a panic attack.

I don't think its uncommon to have a fear of driving but it keeps you from doing a lot of things once you get older and on your own. It does sound like your dreams are definatly linked to your driving.

It is. But you should overcome this fear. Driving is too important.

I asked my stepdad if HE thought there was a connection, and he said that he doesn't think that the dreams CAUSE my driving anxiety, but he does think that they both stem from a common root.

I also have a phobia of driving which is horrible because so many people have given me a hard time about my decision not to learn how to drive. I'm aware of a few things that have caused the problem, but where the root of the phobia started, I'm not 100% sure...

You don't need a car to live. There are many successful people who walk, use bicycles or public transportation. Therapy might be able to help, but don't take their medications! In regards to the people around you, don't let them make you feel bad about your fear.

Good Luck!

I had I dream that I was driving next to a river and for some reason I was propelled out of the drivers window and tossed into the river over and over again.... Note to self: stay away from rivers when behind the wheel
