Last night my husband confessed to his mother he was an atheist and she completely flew off the handle and called him retarded. The truth is my husband is way smarter than her.

She also blames me for my husband's atheism because I accepted it since I'm not a huge Christian anyway. She said she "should have gotten rid of me when she had the chance."

She has no choice in who he falls in love with so she never did have the chance.
But regardless, is anything she doing normal because I don't think it is.

She's wrong for saying those things to you and your husband but I'd say it's normal because nowadays, that's how people greet the truth. With hostility and denial.

But what should I do about my husband? He's really hurt. I mean I could care less about how his mother feels but it's my husband I'm worried about.

He'll be okay. Just give it time. Let him vent to you or hug him or whatever else he might need. You're his wife afterall. If anyone can cheer your husband up, it's you. Sounds like you really love him.

Cut all ties. Good riddance.

She's a religious bigot. You both just need to stay away from her: that type of fanaticism is a form of mental illness and you don't need to expose yourself to it.

I found one of your other accounts btw. Who are you? Because you're not a 70 year old lady or a female college student living with her mom.

Bet you're gonna get on one of your fake accounts to thumb yourself up or tell me off to make it look like people like you and defend you.

It doesn't matter if its normal or not. Classifying the problem won't change it.

People come on here and tell everyone their problems all the time. You act like that's something new. Maybe OP wanted advice or maybe she just wanted to vent. But are you in any position as a human being to judge her for doing so? I think not.

I do want advice. Sorry if my post didn't make it clear. Maybe it was also to vent... but thanks. I hate when people try to attack my questions instead of helping. I usually just scroll right past their trolls and ignore them. I don't make a huge scene about it because there isn't anyone on here worth arguing with.

My husband is hurting from her words and I can't make him feel better. What do I do?

Maybe don't talk to her anymore? I doubt she'll change her mind about him. Maybe when she's cooled down about it she'll be able to talk.

I just wish she was out of our lives. This isn't the first time she has hurt him. She's supposed to be his mother and so against me, but I have never hurt him and she does all the time. I support his happiness instead of what she wants him to be. I feel like he's a grown man and he can choose any career, beliefs or lack thereof he's happiest with. I don't like his mother because she doesn't care if he's happy and she only wants to control him, manipulate him and hurt him emotionally.

I think you should just give it time. By the sound of it, his mom is toxic but like you said he has to make these kinds of choices for himself. If you start speaking with him against her, it might make you look like the bad guy because he obviously still loves her and cares what she thinks. All you can do is be there to support him like you have been doing.

WTF are you talking about? I didn't judge the OP. And where you get the idea that I'm "acting like its something new" is bizarre at the very least.

The situation is what it is every one here saying its not normal for her to act that way isn't going to change how she acts. Apparently for the mother in law it IS normal thats why shes doing it. Whether its normal or not isn't relevant to finding a solution.

Asking "is it normal" on a site called Is It Normal is to be expected. Or did you forget the name of the site?

Nope. Did you read the OP or my response? Reading comprehension is important.

Either way, I was more helpful than you were. You just stated the obvious. Of course it wasn't going to help. But that's the name of the site.

Take her for a nice long ride into the desert administer peyote and leave her there
Comment Hidden (show)
Nope. I think some religious people take it a bit too far.

Daggers work pretty well on Christian mothers-in-law.

She's a total bitch!

I'm sorry to hear about his feelings being hurt. Sons get very close to their mothers sometimes. I'm afraid there's nothing much you can do other than offer support and affection.
