Boyfriend shows no affection buy buys me things

I had a boyfriend for a few years he was a total jerk and tried to make up for his lacking of any type of affection towards me so he made up for it by buying me materialistic things before we ended things he bought me a car and one night after a fight with him being a drunken idiot i keyed my own car, is this normal.
