I will sometimes call my dad by his nickname, but it's usually when I'm joking around with him or I am referring to him in a conversation with someone else.
Most people tend to stick with the traditional but there are some, not many, who will use their parents firstnames.
i think you should respect your parents. don't call thm by their first names - it's rude! btw, here are some ways to call them: ma, pa, mama, papa, mom, dad, mommy, daddy, mummy, pops lol! u get the point!
i think thats kinda weird. not completely 'normal' but im sure theres lots of people who do it. like ok so are you like an only child and thats why? or are you not very close to them or what? im curious, because i would feel odd calling my parents their names, which the only time i have is when they dont answer to 'mom' or 'dad'
HAHA - I have the same issue, man :P...I alway's want to do that too; because hey; arn't our folk's just ppl like everyone else? I mean, first-off I think name's are ridiculous anyway & I personally, (just my opinion): just think they're stupid word's we have repeated million's of time's for diff' ppl to give them some sense of power/security/label or some shit; but I think it's assinine...why can't we just live w/out names? We'd be a hell of a lot stronger w/out em' & why not just 'be ppl' w/out calling ourselves some stupid word? Just what I think.
Anywho, since mankind has this ridiculous invention...they've taken it a step-further - we must call ppl even more ridiculous name's by their 'status', ie. mum, dad, "Boss", sir, maam', Sgt., Dr., etc - all that bullshit...that's even worse to me :P! Geez ppl, get a life. Anyways, the thing is...since there are these 'standard's' drilled-into ppl's minds and most parent's wouldn't agree w/ me, (including mine); they insist I call them mum & dad too...like your's I guess & I've always wanted to call them by their 'real', (well - 'given') names - since they 'must' have names: but of course, they refuse to let me.
So basically, my answer would be - it must be some 'power/status' thing: they're scared to let you call them by their 'name' instead of mum/dad as it take's away their precious athority & 'power' as somehow higher-being's to you, me & any other spawn out there. They think just because they're our 'parents', they're somehow entitled to this 'status' name & they're above us, etc etc...well I say - fuck that! Ya' know, I'd keep-trying & if they ask you, just say, "well, (mum/dad) - arn't you a person like everyone else? And if so, why can't I just be natural w/ you & why can't we just all act like ppl around eachother & equal/etc & call eachother by our given name's? Instead of 'status'?" See what they say! I tried it w/ mine, like I said...and actually - come to think of it, yes - my dad refused; still living in his black & white, closed-in box; (even though I love him, it's still sad); but eventually my mum, 'sort-of' thought about it & as she changed her 'given' name to something else & nobody seems to respect it but me, she let's me call her that sometimes...hey, there's one parent opening-up @ least - try it, it may work ;)...good luck, man :).
you idiots! Some parents actually instruct their children to call them by their first names, so stop going on about respect, you blathering old timers. If that's how things work in your house, that's how things work in your house, dear. I cannot tell you if it's normal or not. Maybe it's normal for your family. shrugs.
I refer to my parents by first name as well. If in public, to help them keep pride, I call them mother and father. BTW, I am 20 years old and on y own.
If they say it's okay, then it's okay, I find it fairly weird myself, but that's because I was raised to say "Dad, Father, Pop" or "Mother, Mom, Mam, Mammy, Mommy, Mummy, Ma", one you could try to be more mature is "Father" or "Mother", the formal type, that's what the Japanese do in their language.
How is it rude? It is simply their names, which is what their parents decided to call them. I am honoring my grandparents by using the name they gave to their child.
