Maybe i'm getting this wrong, but I think You're a young person, and don't understand what kind of art people find in anime.
It's not about the technicue of how it is drawn or rendered, it's the message it carries. Many anime movies have a message that is completely not understandable to kids, so they watch it just as some cartoon, without understanding what's going on.

I don't know shit about anime, but I recently went to a modern art museum in Philadelphia. It was the dumbest shit I have ever seen. People throw some paint on a canvas or cut two things in half and glue them together backwards, call it art, and say it means something, then all the artsy douche-bags pretend they see its meaning. It is a fucking joke man.

It's pretty normal, I wouldn't consider it art either. It's just a poor form of entertainment which people get really obsessed with and defensive about. I'm going to assume your gonna get some nasty posts from anime fans saying that it's about the "story line" when here you are talking art.

I really dont understand how people enjoy it I get sick watching it and what makes me sicker is the people (usually kids) who like it so much they start drawing it them selves and are just so into it they draw it everywhere and get all but hurt when people make fun of them for it, sounds to me like they set them selves up for that.

What people don't understand about anime, is that it is 100% art!!!! Have you actually looked at it you morons!? Do you look at the f**ing backgrounds!? The older versions were actually painted, the drawings are made with fine detail in some of them and the situations they're in consist of many art forms! How could you NOT see it as art!?!?!?!

And yes its entertainment. But expression is something the japanese are strong in. Their music is so creative and everything they do has morals. They have strong expression in their animation. Animation; look it up in a dictionary. Its an art form. And what do you think anime is? Exactly.
And yes there are ones like Pokemon and stuff for kids and are crappy, but they are still art. Just crappy art.

Yeah, I understand get not being able to see anime as art. Art is all personal and an expression to a certain person. It would make sense for people to see it in different ways. I love certain types of anime, but other styles I just can't take seriously like you can't take any anime style seriously.

anime isn,t technically art its foundation aka manga is manga is drawn out anime with words and scenes set out like a comic the only think art like about anime is unlike cartoons there is reason and purpose like a story line and values of daily life most are undetectable to Americans because there Japanese lessons. All and all tho if you take time with watching anime and i mean good anime not rushed and overrated dbz or naruto if you watch things like furi curi lucky star kiba or air gear you'll find many hidden lessons if you focus and there always compelling story so it is in fact art just much lighter art then manga

I can understand why an aspiring fine art student could reject anime as a fine art if all they knew of were kiddie shows like dragon ball, pokemon, and sailor moon. Though I should say that anything can be art, even if it doesn't seem to be very good. Cartoons, comics, anime, and manga are all art, they just don't yet have a very prestigious reputation.

Is drawing an art? If you drew a picture of a monkey in the forest is that considered art? You're probably saying yes - well anime, or any other type of cartoon, is just drawings placed in quick succession of each other, that's all. And I've seen some pretty impression japanimation films where the landscape is breath taking and the shadowing is right on. I think it's a form of art.

ANYTHING can me art. Most mainstream animes, made only to get more money, aren't, but there are some real pieces of art.

I cannot STAND the majority of the Anime seies they produce, many are ridiculous, but the craftsmanship is unbeleivable.
I like sci-fi and robots and things, but I cannot STAND the crap theat they push in episodes of gundam, and I hate the way the mobile-suits 'fight' and so on, but if you take a freeze frame of one of those when they arent moving.
I mean, hell, somebody has gone in, and they've drawn the litte armour panels, the joints and servos, even teeny-tiny rivets and air vents. it's incredible!

You should watch Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, and Howls Moving Castle.

It's the 2 hour movies like these, real anime, that it get's it's reputation from.

Just consider this: Shows with people acting can be bad shows too. It's about the story line.

I like to consider myself an Otaku of sorts, not real hardcore. But I really don't discuss it with others unless it's something REALLY good that translates well to real life. I do realize that a lot of people just overlook anime as just a cartoon. Although I did convince one of my friends who doesn't like it to watch Lucky Star. He was traumatized.

I used to feel that way about abstract art - until someone explained the point to me.
