Dropping Out of University
61% Normal

So I just finished my second year at a notable university which my parents are paying for out of a fund they started when I was young.

Near the beginning of this semester, I opened my own business which has become very successful (I make about 100k+ a year).

Starting the business was extremely stressful and time consuming, and as a result, I received a failed year standing and may have to take some college courses to get back on track.

The truth is that I was never interested in pursuing a degree, and have always wanted to just run my own businesses and be an entrepreneur. No degree is required for that and I have always relied on my own abilities to teach myself what I need to know (thank God for the internet.. but not literally.. I'm atheist).

Nutshell: I want to drop out and go into business full time. Is this a good decision? How do I break it to my parents who take every chance they get to remind me about how important my education is? Is it normal to want something different than the norm ike this?

Thanks Everyone.

i know plenty of people like you. my advice is that your parents arent wrong. getting some kind of degree is a valuable thing. especially for ones kids (ie your parents). you want to set an example for your or anyone you may influence. im not saying to force college but always give them that option, im pretty sure your parents gave you that.

my advice to you would be to take classes at a junior or community college or even online. Having a degree to fall back on is never a bad thing. and it will also please your parents who only want the best for you.

also considering you already started college getting an associates or bachelors from a smaller college/higher education facility shouldnt be all that hard.
wanting to drop out when you've found a sense of security in a career is quite common. thousands of college students drop out for similar reasons. the one thing you have to remember is that just because you have financial security now does not mean it will last a lifetime. a degree on the other hand cannot be stripped of you. if you are doing as well as you say you are, then take time out and pursue your degree while running your business. that little piece of paper can mean a world of difference in future endeavors
well i think you should stay in school. i know its a lot to juggle especially since you have your own business. but let's say in 3 years your business goes way down hill and u can't run it anymore....that degree will be your plan b/ back up plan.
From what you say your business is quite successful. It also takes your time & interest away from school.

Well - you can always go back to uni. It is not like you are leaving to be a bum.
Drop out. You're already earning over 100k per year and you're doing something you're interested in. A degree is a great thing to have, but by the sounds of it, you just don't need it. I have a first-class Biology degree, from a good university, and I can safely say that it hasn't helped me one bit.

Besides, it's not like you can never go back.
You don't need a degree. Many people will try and tell you that you need a degree for a succesful life, but they don't know shit. There are many successful people without degrees. If you already have your business set up, and are already making a shitload of money, then ditch the school. Like you said, you don't need a laminated peice of paper to be an entrepeneur. Live your life the way you want to. Everybody gets one.
